Seems to me that Abby is just doing what he can to make a few bucks selling gimmicks, like a lot of the older big names do. It's what they did throughout their careers, and it's the way the business works, from the indies, all the way up to WWE.
If there's a d-bag in this story, it's the reporter who clearly resents having to cover something as lowbrow as pro wrestling.

Abdullah is a legend. I've never heard bad things about him, and its great that hes wrestling at 73. Maybe the reporter was not aware of his legendary status..

I had the pleasure of seeing Abdullah the Butcher vs. Necro Butcher at a show about 5 years ago.
The grooves on that man's forehead are absurd, as are the pants that go up to his armpits. Great show though.

He kind of seemed like one at Fanfest last year. I heard someone ask if he would personalize their autograph and he snapped, "No! They're not paying me to personalize things!" If someone would take a picture of him, he'd get pissy and start demanding they erase it. The people at his table during the Hall of Heroes banquet got stiffed (at least by Abby, knowing the promoter he probably did something to try to make up for it). It's supposed to be dinner with the legend, then a group photo is taken at the table. Abby stayed on his phone throughout the dinner, then bailed before the photo.
I understand wanting to make money, believe me. But being around him for much time at all is enough to grate on the nerves.

I've heard a lot of bad things about Abdullah on shoots, etc. He's always trying to make a dollar and has been known to hold promoters up.

Doesn't sound any different than a lot of wrestlers who are still active long after they've had their moment in the son.
I have an Abdulah-Kevin Sullivan match on DVD from 2001 and it's pretty horrid. It's in the ECW arena, but maybe 30 fans are there, and it's just sad to watch.

Sounds like a reporter just writing what he sees.

Abdullah is money motivated, there's nothing wrong with that as long as you're willing to admit it. The reporter obviously has a condescending view of wrestling IMO.

Well that article sucked.
How else would somebody who has been in the business for that long be? What was the writer expecting?

Oh the reporter is definitely an ass. And Abby looking for the bucks wherever he can isn't what makes me think he can be a prick. I'm just going by what I saw and heard at Fanfest. Oddly enough, he actually told me "thank you" when he handed my 8x10s back. I don't know if it was because I didn't talk to him or ask him to personalize it, or if he just honestly felt like saying thanks.

Abby a dick, huh?
Didn't he demand black wrestlers pay him if they wrestled in Japan?

There's a point where it goes beyond "making a buck". Abby comes off as a big douchebag here. Abby is a wrestling legend, sure, but it's not 1978 anymore and demanding to be paid for an interview (one where his restaurant AND his tell-all is mentioned) just makes him money grubbing.
At some point he's gonna charge people to LOOK at him.

In all the shoots I've seen people always say Abdullah is a good guy, but he is ruthless when it comes to money.

I've met Abby a few times and ate at his world famous restaurant. As far as I'm concerned he's cool as hell and treated me and my friends great. Nothing wrong with Abby getting paid, at least we won't hear a Randy The Ram story about him.
