TNA or some other company would need to be a WCW-level competitor, and make their own top stars, while WWE is open to new ideas for competition, and WWE would have to get somebody from the other promotion and have snazzy hype videos, leading to their debut.

I don't think we will ever see that kind of a pop for anyone new again. audiences will pop for someone they know. unfortunately, TNA is nowhere on the radar for the majority of wrestling viewers, so AJ might not get jericho level pops. Sting is a different case. i think he will get the hitman level of pops, namely the dads or the 30s guys in the arena. the newer generation has not seen sting in the ring for close to 10 years now.
the only guy, who could get a crowd to pop on his RETURN to the ring?
Brock Lesnar

AJ Styles could have an equal or possibly better debut depending on location.

It was lightning in a bottle. Jericho was HUGELY over at the time and everybody knew he was being misused in WCW. The WWE fans were pumped to see what he was capable of achieving in the E with the right support.
He may have been a mid carder at the time, but if he'd started a program with the Rock that night it owuld have been totally credible. Everyone knew he was on the verge of being a breakout star.
And then.....I don't know what happened. Shamrock, Road Dogg, Chyna, having to return the title to Triple H. Jericho just never reached superstardom. He was on the cusp but he never reached that level.

Tazz's debut was almost as good as Jericho's.... probably because it was in MSG but yeah crowd's are almost dead compared to back then. anyone from TNA wouldn't work Vince would have to actually acknowledge TNA. right now they expect most fans to not know or care about TNA and they don't. as big as Sting was a Jeff Hardy return would do a lot more. even a Angle or RVD return would still get people talking. I mean really? most people probably know more about Daniel Bryan now than AJ or Joe. having a name like Samoa Joe doesn't help either.
it's sad though back then it was war and WWE acknowledged WCW and they were the enemy now there's just nobody even close to being competition so if someone does jump they go to ...."development" or NXT or maybe Smackdown/Raw.
I mean who from TNA has done much of anything so far in the WWE?
when people from WCW jumped, they were misused and the WWE was ready to capitalize as they were already known. now if somebody jumps from TNA it's straight to FCW to get some generic name and a new look since most people won't know them from TNA anyway.

True, Tazz' debut was red hot. The MSG crowd new he was debuting that night and they just exploded when he came out and choked Angle out. Sadly, he's another guy that lost his momentum pretty quick. But the debut was great.
Crowds just aren't as hot these days. I'm sure they will be again in a decade or so, but for now, they are pretty docile.

I'm gonna vote for that also... the knock is that WWE is pandering to kids, but SOMEONE has to take the kids, and I'm sure a lot of the parents grew up with guys like Warrior. If his music hit, I could see a good pop.

They can. But they have to wait for 2999 to do so.
...sorry.

Angle's music hitting would make people go crazy, but he's a return.
Honestly, no, I don't think so.

I don't even see Sting pulling it off sadly. Much of the younger fans weren't even born when WCW croaked. And they're the more vocal segment of modern WWE crowds.

Unless the WWE starts running shows in the Impact Zone, there is absolutely no way AJ Styles would ever get an Attitude-era pop.

I dunno I dont think so I mean not with the whole internet thing and being no element of surprise these days due to spoilers and legal issues with TNA and WWE and I dont know what TNAs rule is about people leaving and going to WWE and how long they have a no compete clause for tbh if Angle left TNA everybody would know hes going WWE...if he was on iMPACT! on the thursday and RAW on the monday....I believe bricks will be s***.
But that isnt possible

No because when Jericho debuted the live crowds were older and a lot more "smart" than the live crowds that attend today, so they not only knew who Jericho was, but they knew what he was capable of and how WCW had been misusing hm, so were excited at the prospect of what he cold do int he WWF.
While Sting would get a good nostaligia pop, I don't think it would be an epic pop as again the younger crowds are not as famliar with him, just look at the pops for a returning Brett Hart, sure he got good reactions but they were not the Epic Monster pop that wrestler with his history shoudl have been getting.
SO basically because of the lack of competition producing familiar faces to debut, and the younger crowds, we will never see that type of pop again.

I know he's been in WWE but If for some odd reason if WWE kept Bryan Danielson returning secret and there was a countdown, "The Final Countdown" and his named showed on the screen, I would totally mark out. taken as how im fron the northwest and he is BIG here, say seattle or even portland, the crowd would go nuts. I was at portland for RAW this past march and a lot of people had danielson signs and were chanting for him or talking about him while in line. It could be BIG if they play the right city.

I agree that's it's possible with the right crowd, Punk got a great reception without much TV exposure so I expect Samoa Joe or AJ could top that.
Although anybody could use Jericho's debut promo:

I always loved the "filthy fat little hands" line!
But yeah, this promo sums up the company pretty well.

It's funny. When Jericho made that promo, the lines about ratings and buyrates going down was tongue in cheek since ratings and business as a whole was doing great.
Now that Jericho promo fits perfectly with the company's current position. What a difference a decade makes.
