Boosting the price in a time of economic hardship that has hit the traditional wrestling audience will do that. The PG rating hasn't helped as people with kids just don't have a spare $45 a month to spend on a PPV that isn't much better than what is shown on TV for free.
I wonder if DVD sales are increasing in any way to compensate or if things are dropping across the board.

Actually, you're probably best comparing Extreme Rules 2010 to Backlash 2009, not Extreme Rules 2009, since it was the April timeslot that ER '10 took over this year.
They both got the same number of buys, 182000 each. Which would mean they'd actually, given the price hike, made a better profit from that April slot. $910k, if I have my sums right.
Which translates into 522,000 buys total for Apr-May-June 2010, compared to 588,000 buys for Apr-May-June 2009 (my head aches...)
588,000 x $39.95 = $23,490,600 for 2009 522,000 x $44.95 = $23,463,900 for 2010
A loss of $26,700.
I need some asprin, anyone else want to tackle this?

Vince, my suggestion is you dump Fatal Four Way immediately. That idea did not work at all....

I remember when I was a kid and I had to beg for my mom to buy a wrestling ppv, and back then the price was only about $30 (aside from WM), and even then I could only get 2 ppv/year. Keep in mind we weren't bad off in the money department at the time either.
Currently though, wrestling isn't something I spend money on anyway.

Still feel good about the gimmick PPVs? I'm good about gimmick PPV's. Now, gimmick match PPV's, I'm not so big about those.

I'll go with the general consensus that its a combination of a lousy economy, expensive PPVs and the overall migration of the core audience to the UFC.
I'm not sure what the answer is, but the current strategy doesn't seem to be working.

Still feel good about the gimmick PPVs? I usually do not weigh in on these things - just because I don't like to sit here and pretend like I know what I'm talking about from a business stand point. This is not a dig at anyone else at all - just how I feel about my own "knowledge". However, that being said - I don't think it's a good idea to put so much faith in the gimmick PPV's. Hey, I'm a big fan of gimmick matches - but if the build isn't there, then why care?

More PPV's with less buildup, cost rising and many claims of product stagnation...coupled with a sour economy.
Not very surprising. The hard part is figuring out where to go from here.

The gimmick PPVs haven't been helping nor have they been really entertaining. I'm surprised over the limit didn't get less buys than D2D with the lack of buidup it had. That with the lousy economy and the high cost is also hurting it.

Am I the only one that thinks this isn't that bad?
A worrying trend, for sure. But going from making $24mil off three PPV's to making $23mil is hardly the sign of the impending apocalypse.

The gimmick PPVs haven't been helping but the economy is in the crapper, people are watching matches for free, and there is no build. We should go down to 10-12 PPVs a year and not do a gimmick PPV for every damn match type. Either that, or if you're going to have a PPV called "Hell in a Cell" or "Fatal 4 Way" have every match be a HIAC of Fatal 4 Way. Bad idea? Then don't do it in the first place!

My opinion on this:
1. Too many Shows 2. Too High of a Price 3. Crappy build (Fatal 4 Way, I'm looking at you)

WWE should seriously go back to 12 PPV a year format. It worked fine in the past.
"Money in The Bank" is okay for a PPV with 2 MITBs and an undercard b/c the MITB matches actually stipulate a title shot. Like the Royal Rumble. But, they should decide whether to do a MITB at Mania or at its own PPV.
Now, HIAC and TLC are kinda ridiculous because it makes the HIAC/TLC matches seem less special. The MITB and Royal Rumble are special because the Rumble happens once a year and the MITB guarantees a title shot (and should happen once a year). The TLC and HIAC matches are just matches to further/end a feud. And, we already have Extreme Rules. We used to have TLC matches there. Why the need for a separate PPV?
Also, gimmick PPVs are way too formulaic and predictable. Used to, so and so would have a feud. Then match type A, B, C depending. Now, the match types are dictated by the next PPV on the schedule. I mean, it's like "Wrestler A and Wrestler B should have a 2/3 Falls Match next but NOOOO Hell in A Cell is coming up so they'll have a HIAC match next. And so will Wrestler C and Wrestler D." Takes away from the unpredictability/specialness of feuds. IMO.

Bad Product + Oversaturation of PPVs + Higher Cost Per PPV + Other entertainment options eating at the audience that will spend the higher PPV cost + Gimmicky PPV = Loss of Revenue

They really need to lower the damn price of these things. $45 is a slap in the face? If I was a little kid who asked his parents to order a $45 PPV they would have laughed in my face or hit me with the belt.
There is no way the average WWE PPV is worth $45. Title changes are meaningless, so they can switch them all they want, and the matches are rinsed and reused over and over again.

If they would stop charging $50 for PPVs when the UK gets half of them free they might be able to keep the numbers up.
Really, with how much they charge and how bad all of the non-Money in the Bank PPVs have been this year, it's deserved.

Vince can blame all the communal parties and UFC he wants. I am sure those are part of the reasons but let's take a look at the Fatal Four Way PPV. They had 3 matches that were not advertised including one that was said to be Match of the night (Bourne v Jericho). I am sure had they advertised those 3 matches they could've pulled better numbers. But as well the price is perhaps to blame as much as PG. There is nothing wrong with going PG, but the fact is that WWE is alienating it's older audience. The early to mid 90s was PG wrestling but they didn't specifically cater to just kids. They also should cut down on PPVs. Bring back a In Your House style PPV where you pay a fraction of the cost.
