It's a stupid name which is the point. No, it's a stupid name because they put it on Joe Hennig. If random FCW wrestler came up with the name you wouldn't care nor anyone else (except those who watch FCW). But if you're point is that "it's stupid" and won't accept the explanation then *shrugs* keep on thinking it's stupid i guess. McGillicutty is a silly name on anyone whether they be male, female, or in between. Even while saying the name loud, it's impossible not to laugh. How are we supposed to take the guy seriously with a moniker like that? Especially seeing that he's supposed to be a babyface? I don't care if it's his mother's name, even if her first name is Beulah. MCGILLICUTTY IS A TERRIBLE NAME FOR A SERIOUS BABYFACE.

Yet what he has shown on the mic and in the ring isn't stupid nor silly. So should i take him seriously for being a good wrestler and having charisma and mic work or should i laugh and think he's dumb because of his name....decisions decisions. Luckily i'm a fan of pro wrestlingsports entertainment/what happens in the ring and don't get distracted or taken back by a persons name. For the record i don't laugh when i say McGillicutty because....well why would i laugh at a name?

I don't see the problem. Yes it's a bit silly, but it's not the worst name out there, The Undertaker anyone? I think some people are over-reacting about it

Does it really matter? I mean really? He's a good wrestler and has charisma, he is getting over. What is the problem? This is something that just irks me about internet fans. They give him a name "the name sucks!". They then try to give a kayfabe explanation "it's not the real maiden name!". THIS IS WRESTLING, THEY MAKE UP NAMES! And most of the time it isn't creative who just says "Use this name or walk". It's the wrestler along with creative looking for a name. I can almost guarantee that Mike had a say in what his name was. Actually, it's kind of growing on me. It's the same with Dolph, people ragged on his name, and then got used to it, just like with Daniel Bryan, just like with Bourne and everyone else who has had a name change. Listen i understand having the initial WTF moment because of his family name but if in kayfabe he says he picked this name because it was his mothers maiden name and he wanted to stand on his own, then what is the problem? Be happy that creative gave you any explanation because 9 times out of 10 they don't. Apologizes for the rant but this is just something that gets under my skin. I think the big deal that's being made about it is because he's a 3rd generation wrestler, not because they changed his name. With the three you listed, none of them have parents or family that were in wrestling. Also, with all the 3rd generation guys on the WWE roster (not NXT) that use their own names (Orton, DiBiase) or close approximations (Rhodes, Natalya, Hart Smith), it puts into question the logic of changing a wrestler's name that much that has a family history tied to wrestling and WWE. That said, it seems like a lot of the new guys from FCW that are 2nd or 3rd generation are getting new names. Take the Uso (Fatu) twins, Tamina, Husky Harris, or Michael McGillicutty. With the Usos and Tamina, they are reasonable enough names, but the latter two are silly and awkward (respectively). What it comes down to is really in-ring or on the mic. If the wrestler is solid -> awesome in those two areas, it's not a big deal.

If he's good enough in the ring, we should be able to look past a goofy name. {Spoiler}

I think it has too many syllables. If it was his real name fair enough but if you get to make one up you should maybe go for 2 or 3 syllables tops.

I suspect they will revert to Hennig, and personally I think Mike/Michael Hennig sounds better than Joe Hennig. I can see the promo for the latter if he goes with his real name... Matthews: "So I'm here with Michael McGillicutty and--" Michael: "There's one problem with that, Josh. I've been living a lie for too long. My last name isn't 'McGillicutty,' it's 'Hennig.' And my first name isn't 'Michael,' either. It's... just 'Joe.'

I say, since the WC community had Nipple H, we refer to Joe Hennig as "Larry Leonard." That's his mom's real maiden name and it "honors" his grandpappy. That or Lenny Leonard like the dude in the Simpsons.

For the record i don't laugh when i say McGillicutty because....well why would i laugh at a name? That's fine that you don't have a problem with the guy's name. It's good to have your own opinions and such. The problem though is that most people do have a problem with the name. The first name is fine. I have no problem with Michael. It's the last name that does it. Of all the names you had to pick from, why choose McGillicutty? Why not just Michael Hennig? At least you could still own that name. McGillicutty seems like one better suited for Sheamus. At least his gimmick is that he's Irish. It's the same problem that people have with Dolph Ziggler. Yeah, the guy is talented. He's got in ring skills, he's great at selling, and he's a decent promo. The problem though is that even after beating the Great Khali, a former World Champion TWICE, once by submission, the guy is still not very over as a heel. Why? I have to think it has something to do with the name. It's probably not entirely the name's fault, but it may have something to do with it. And it's not just him. There are plenty of people down in FCW who have been stuck with terrible names just so WWE can own the rights to them. I mean LIFT Sawyer? CABLE Jones? SWEET PAPI SANCHEZ?! Are you TRYING to bury these guys before they even get a shot at being called up? It's not even just those guys either. They've done it to people from the past too. Anyone remember when Danny Basham was repackaged as the dark brooding gothic heel? Did they give him a fitting name to go with it? Perhaps something like Damaja? Nope. They just kept the name Danny Basham. Yeah, that's a scary name. You can guess what happened after that. I have no problem with changing the guy's name. I mean you've gotta do something if you want to own the rights to their name if they happen to get released. I do, however, have a problem with people getting stuck with silly names that make them impossible to take seriously. Maybe if the guy was a heel then it wouldn't be as bad. At least you're supposed to laugh at those guys. The problem though is he's being pushed as a serious babyface with a comedy babyface's last name. It's just doesn't make sense if you ask me.

Why don't you post some totally fictional alternative name options for Hennig (Assume they don't want to use his real name for whatever reason), and I'm sure we can pick it apart and tell you why it's a dumb name for a wrestler.

One easy fallback is to use their middle name as a last name. Makes sense unless their middle name is something weird, or you're going for a name that sounds like it's a certain ethnicity. Joe's is Curtis. If worried about ownership, stick a random normal sounding first name in front of it (like "Mike", not so much like "Dolph").
