(Sept. 30) -- First came the breakfast sandwich. Then the breakfast burrito. And now, the breakfast pizza?
Domino's Pizza appears to be the latest fast-food eatery to modify its lunch and dinner staples in an attempt to attract morning customers, this time with a cheesy pie topped with egg and breakfast meats.
Served only at one Domino's location in Dayton, Ohio -- the chain's only U.S. franchise to operate 24 hours a day -- the breakfast-themed pie features egg and cheddar cheese on a pizza crust topped with bacon and ham.
A Domino's in Dayton, Ohio, is going where no other Domino's has gone before: It's introduced a breakfast pizza that actually looks like breakfast.
Tristan Koehler, the owner of the Domino's restaurant offering the egg-topped pizza, wouldn't say whether he thinks his piping-hot breakfast pie will ever supplant cold pizza -- a leftover that's already a popular morning dish for a certain segment of the population.
"I'm sure there are some college students at the University of Dayton that would be glad to be the judge of that," Koehler said.
The pie features all of the fixings of a traditional diner breakfast, though the eggs only come one way -- meaning sunny-side up isn't an option.
It's served 24 hours a day, with a medium pizza selling for $7.99.
Koehler didn't want to step on the dough of any pizza purists when asked whether his egg-topped pie really qualifies as pizza.
"All we know is it's on a pizza crust ... and people in Dayton seem to be enjoying it," he said.
Though some media outlets including the New York Daily News have reported that if the pie proves to be popular, it might appear on the menu at other Domino's locations, a spokesman for the pizza chain told AOL News that's not the case.
"This is not part of a test of breakfast pizza, and there is no plan to roll this out nationally based on the Dayton store," said spokesman Chris Brandon. "However, we do think it's pretty cool."
It might be cool, but it's unclear if the dish will grab the nation's attention, and stomachs, like other fast-food creations including KFC's Double Down -- a concoction that, depending on your opinion, either revolutionized or bastardized the sandwich by replacing bread with fried chicken cutlets.
Pizza expert Adam Kuban, community manager at Serious Eats and founder of the legendary pizza blog Slice, says that although the egg-topped pie is a unique offering for a fast-food restaurant, it's "fairly tame" compared to the Double Down.
"There's plenty of precedent for egg-topped pizza in the pizza world," Kuban said.
And he's eager to taste this Domino's pie.
"I would love to give that a try if they brought it to the Domino's in my area," Kuban said. "I always try the weird stuff at the chains."
According to blogger Jason Feirman, founder of I Dream of Pizza, egg-topped pizzas are actually quite the rage.
"Breakfast pizza can absolutely be done well," he said. "It's been popping up on menus at pizza places throughout New York City in recent months."
Citing much-lauded New York City pizzerias like Motorino and Pulino -- which both offer eggy breakfast pies -- Feirman says Domino's could be taking a step in the right direction.
"If people don't normally start ordering pies from Domino's until lunchtime, now Domino's can bring in money during the morning hours," he said.
The breakfast-themed pie might not replace cold pizza, but Feirman says an eggy pizza is better than no pizza at all.
"It's not that their breakfast pies will necessarily taste better than leftover pizza, but it's another option for when there is no cold pizza around."
