As many know, the original plan for WWE's ECW was to make a stand-alone, Northeast-based territory streaming shows online (and available for download to iPhones and such)--"ECW on Wi-Fi," so to speak.
Of course, with national TV, those ideas changed. But what if the original idea would've gone through? How would an online ECW show have worked? Would top-stars like Angle and Big Show still have gone there, or just former ECW stars (RVD, Sabu, Dreamer, Sandman, ect) and new talent (Punk, Burke, Birchall, Knox, ect)? Would there be online PPVs or would they be available on TV as well? Would the ECW guys compete on WWE PPVs instead? What would it have been like?

For "common knowledge", I don't remember this one.

Yes, really. That was the original idea.

Yeah, I never heard of this at all, and from the name it sounds like it was something that might have happened if the Sci Fi channel dropped the show, as opposed to the original idea.

It would have been pretty interesting. With 2 hours, obviously you're going to need a stronger talent roster. So, it would have been interesting to see what other ECW originals would have been brought in, and who would have been brought up from developmental, other then CM Punk and Mike Knox.

A Paul Heyman booked WWE back minor league with more exposure and a few true WWE wrestlers in the mix

When I first read the thread title, I thought it said "ECW on Wii-Fit."
Which would have been epic, controlling Sandman by swinging the Wii controller to bash in someone's head with a cane.

Incidentally, what would've been the size of a roster with a two-hour show? How many active wrestlers (not counting managers or authority figures or announcers) would be ideal? 30? 35?

I would have been down with it. The biggest and best (or worse) thing about doing everything online is that there's no ratings, and they could adapt the advertising to however they would have needed. However, the revenue probably wouldn't have been as good as it was on cable.

Hardcore TV V2.0 I like it. Plus, it could really be a spearate entity due to it's internet status, and stay a niche thing without having to become a third WWE brand...basically a real, evolved ECW in the year 2006.

On the other hand, it could've still be an hour show--maybe 52 minutes with a few ads, but more time than a regular hour long wrestling show.
We probably still would've seen the hardcore element toned down, but I doubt it would've been as toned down as it became on Sci-Fi. Joey Styles once suggested a pretty good compromise on his blog: weapons and interference are illegal (unless otherwise noted), but there are no count-outs, chokes are legal, closed fists are legal, and there are no rope breaks (and instead of DQs, there would be no contests where neither wrestler or team wins).

Also, I'd have a few stars there, but not as many. My ideal choices from that time period would be RVD (who you'd have to have in ECW) and Orton. From there, bringing in a ton of developmental guys and unused RAW/SmackDown guys and rounding it out with some ECW Originals, and you'd come to a roster in the 30 man range (not counting all the announcers, valets, and so on).
