All very true. I find if interesting that two of the biggest transitional seasons featured a lot of established actors. SNL needs to have unknowns properties that become stars rather than stars that work an ensemble to work

That article picture has to have probably hands down the most random selection of cast members ever. I mean, wow.

I still find it weird that Robert Downy Jr of all people is a former cast member. He doesn't seem like the sketch type to me.

Downey Jr, and Anthony Michael Hall were pretty bad on SNL. They didn't really work in the format.

Actually I could see him working as a host now. Keeping in mind that 85-86 was right smack dab in the middle of his heavy drug use and watching the show it seems obvious that both he and AMH both felt they were to big for the show. Now I think as an actor he would enjoy the live theater nature of the show.

Actually I just checked, and Robert Downey Jr. did host SNL once in '96.

1996? I wonder what he was promoting. I'm guessing it was one of his lame romantic comedies.

Maybe it was Two Guys and Girl. Anyway reading the transcripts I realized this was the post election 1996 episode where Bob Dole semi-famously appeared and told Norm MacDonald that his impression of him was really his impression of Dan Aykroyd doing Bob Dole. I remembered that cold open bit but not the host. Which most have meant the show wasn't that strong.

The best part of Robert Downey Jr's hosting gig in '96 was the sketch where Norm MacDonald was a gangleader trying to lead his gang to fight another one, and then becoming increasingly baffled by their WEST SIDE STORY-esque dance routines.
Also, from what I understand, improv wouldn't really help one out working on SNL, as Lorne Michaels is notorious for getting mad when somebody goes off-script. That's why Adrien Brody hasn't been back to host.

I think people use improv as an all purpose term for sketch comedy. In reality most of the popular sketch comedy shows of the past 40 years (Python, KITH, SCTV, The State, Mr.Show, etc.) were all written and rehearsed in advance of the shooting. Second City still does improv and because so many SNL cast members have come from there I think that is where the linked was formed. But Second City also has a lot of material that is written before the shows. Famous sketches like Matt Foley Motivation Speaker or The Ladies Man were written and performed as set pieces at Second City.

But I think RDJ's more of an actor who's quick wit lends to ad-libbing more than an actual sketch comedy performer. I remember reading and hearing a lot of jokes about the IRON MAN movies not having actual scripts.

What was the deal with Adrien Brody?

If I remember correctly, Brody came out dressed as a rastafarian or dressed in some costume while introducing the musical guest and it went on too long and that pissed off Lorne Michaels. Also, SNL is live, even with tape delay, it has to be done with alot of precision to keep the show on track and schedule. Probably very stressful to keep it all together.

What was the deal with Adrien Brody? He was introducing musical guest Sean Paul, and he was supposed to just say "Ladies and Gentlemen, Sean Paul." Instead, he rambled incoherently in a Jamaican accent for about a minute before introducing the performer.
