Or National Novel Writing month for the uninitiated: www.nanowrimo.orgI'm attempting to write a YA fantasy novel for this year. I didn't get too far with my novel last year, so hopefully I can get a bit closer to the end goal this year. Anyone else?

I thought of making this same thread while at work today. I'm going to attempt it this year, as last year I wasn't made aware of NaNoWriMo until mid-November.

I did it last year but I don't have the mental energy for this year.

I want to make an attempt at this.
Especially since my friends did this last year and completed it.

I'm on it, so far so good... even if it's the first day.

Someday I would love to participate, but I'd prefer to organize my ideas and lay them out before actually writing. That and I'm unemployed and would rather do this in the free time of what a job allows rather than use time that I could be using to search for a job. That said, I'd recommend that everyone check out The Elements of Style, a book on proper and preferred English language usage for writing. It's endorsed by many professional authors to this day - I first learned about it from Stephen King's book On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft, which is also an excellent book about writing.

As a huge fan of Chuck Palahniuk's work, I'd like to offer this as well: **Suppose I should include a language warning, as it IS Palahniuk stuff, after all** chuckpalahniuk.net/workshop/chucks-essays-2004-2One of his essays on developing a theme in your writing. This site, while not run by Chuck himself, offers plenty of his essays and various writing tips/tricks/etc. If you're a fan of his style, the site is a great read and a wonderful tool. I've often thought about penning a novel, as I love love LOVE the written word -- I just have zero idea on what I would write about. Then again, my writing has always been best when it's just left to the heat of the moment, so maybe I should give it a go and see what comes out?

No chance in hell of me ever doing this - I have a hard enough time trying to write song lyrics.

No chance in hell of me ever doing this - I have a hard enough time trying to write song lyrics. If you really want to push yourself with song writing you can always do what Jonathan Coulton does and write one song a week.
