I watched Glee for the first time tonight because it was the Rocky Horror episode, and my daughter and I are big fans of the movie. I had no preconceived notions about the show. I really don't know much about it except that it's very popular, and it has Jane Lynch is in it, and I love me some Jane Lynch. Well it sucked. It sucked bad. It wasn't funny, the cast is very annoying and obnoxious, AND they butchered Rocky Horror. The songs sounded like shit. This is all IMO, of course.
So can any fans of the show explain to me what is good about this show? Because I am utterly mystified. Was this just a bad episode? Why is this show so popular and loved?

I made a thread very similar to this in the spring. I couldn't get an answer.

It is basically High School Musical, the TV Show.

Honestly.....The "theme" episodes are weaker than the main series (See also: the "Brittany" and "Madonna" episodes)
As to why the show is so good.....Honestly, I preferred the first season. It's campy at times, but overall it's not bad for network.
The first season really set things up well, and so far....even as one of the show's more vocal supporters the Second season has been poor by comparison.

I made a thread very similar to this in the spring. I couldn't get an answer. I expect the same results here. I was just astonished at how bad it was. I figured going in I might not "get it". I am most definitely not the show's target demo. But I figured at least the singing would be decent. No Dice. It was like watching all those soulless Star Search contestants belt out soft rock tunes with a smile on their face and a look in their eyes that says "I'm completely dead inside" The douche chills were running high. I didn't make it the entire hour. As soon as the fat black chick started belting out "Sweet Transvestite" like it was a C&C Music factory song, I lost it and turned it off.

Honestly when I first saw the commercials I thought it would get a month, ya know, normal FOX time. I haven't watched the show yet, but Fox seems to have struck gold with it.

That's basically Fox's mantra now... A show about music (Glee, American Idol... that's on Fox... right?) A show from Seth MacFarline

See I am someone who should love Glee. I like musicals, I like stories about cast getting together and supporting each other and succeeding and I like camp. But I find Glee to just be terrible.

Glee is a guilty pleasure of mine. I usually hate the autotuned, mass-produced stuff. But something about this show, I like. I think it's because it's like musical theatre put in a TV format. I can totally get why people would hate it though. I kind of turn my brain off - I went to school for musical theatre, and hate the fact that they autotune everything. Can't put my finger on why I like it.

Jane Lynch is awesome. I like the writing. That's why I watch.
The music is horrible. It's like "Kids Bop".
So, when it's a music heavy episode, it tends to suck IMO. When it's a "Sue (Lynch) vs. the Glee Club" centric episode, it shines.

It is basically High School Musical, the TV Show. This + "Kidz Bop". Glee is incredibly unfunny and horribly tacky. I like to think of it as the new "O.C.", a show that was initially well recieved, critically and commercially. Shortly thereafter it became a "phenomenon". Then, abruptly, it tapered off significantly because its shelf life was extremely limited, its storylines were boring and repetitive, and its characters were thinly developed and stereotypical.

I've been watching the past few weeks. It really is a bad show. Almost all the characters are assholes.
The main girl is a self absorbed diva(and has a terrible real life reputation) The Gay kid is a self absorbed diva one step away from a rapist, but getting treated as the victim. The Cheerleaders are unapologetic Bond Villain Henchmen(and lesbians... an interesting character choice)
Plus the autotune is really annoying, sometimes even when they talk, they autotune.

Never seen the show, but the promos certainly don't make me want to see it.
I did see a Glee parody skit on SNL recently (hosted by Jane Lynch, natch) and the audience was tittering quite a bit at the cast members portrayal of the characters. This led me to believe that it was a fairly accurate parody, and if that's the case, I know I'm not missing anything.

I'm a person who should hate "Glee" with every fiber of my being because I can't stand musicals...
yet I love it.
The episode with Neil Patrick Harris in it is beyond awesome. Also, I forgive the use of the Auto-Tune software because the cast are great singers.

Honestly, to get a good feel for the show and understand why it became so popular watch the first few episodes. Tonight's episode might have been the worst in the show's history.
There's a good mix of high school drama, music, romance, and comedy. The one to especially look into is "Dream On" featuring Neil Patrick Harris. Its probably the best episode in the series.
Also, the character Brittany probably has some of the greatest off the wall one liners in the history of TV.

There seems to be several sitcoms these days that are thriving on smugness and sarcasm and no laugh tracks. I can't stand watching a show where all the characters are rude assholes. None of them are decent.

Any show with Neil Patrick Harris in an episode I just can't watch. It's pretty much the opposite of an endorsement for me.

I'm a big fan of Glee, although I do think they're losing sight of what made the show good in the first place, and putting too much faith in the music over storylines - in fact, storylines seem to be absent this season, which is definitely lagging behind the first one. Something notable - I was a big fan of Ryan Murphy's Popular, about ten years back, but the same thing happened to that - the characters got established, and then season two was basically plotless, and they just played off of each other without any noticable goal.
