I'm pleasantly surprised to see so many awesome bands represented in this thread: The Clash, the Replacements, the Buzzcocks, the supremely underrated (in the grand scheme of things) Bikini Kill. My top five in the broad scheme of things:
-Jawbreaker -Crime in Stereo -Against Me! (even if I haven't listened to my favorite stuff from them in years which, in a way, preserves some of my affection for them) -Kid Dynamite -Misfits
It's extremely difficult to pick, though. Ridiculously hard, especially when you factor in my affection for many other older bands (Ramones, Screeching Weasel, Descendents, The Clash, Bikini Kill).

Count me in for the Misfits. Danzig, Graves, Only, I like it all. The Crimson Ghost tattoo on my arm agrees with this... But there really isn't a wrong answer here every bit of punk music is good, that is until the 2000's. What's wrong with punk after the 2000s? There are loads and loads of awesome bands and songs out there from any variation of punk you might enjoy. The '90s also produced a lot of disposable ska/pop-punk to go along with the good stuff.

They don't get nearly enough love. Descendents was one of the first punk bands I ever got into, so I give them a lot of credit for helping pull me in. They're definitely at the top of my list as far as punk bands, although admittedly I don't listen to them as often anymore (I listened to them way too much during a very hard time of my life last year and I'm still working on being able to listen to them without feeling down). My Descendents shirt, however, is one of my favorite shirts ever. Its this one right here: Also, as far as bands that I love for personal reasons, Unwritten Law. They're not super popular or anything and debateable as far as being called "punk" goes, but they're one of my favorite bands ever. My best friend in the world partially owe our nearly decade long, amazing friendship to Unwritten Law.

Thanks for making this an interesting thread. However, I'm going to have to delete it and ban everyone who posted more than one favorite - it's just a personal thing, don't think I bear a grudge.

Another under rated band is DOA. The album they did with Jello stands right up there with his DK stuff IMO.
Also, some folks would file NYHC under punk, some wouldn't. But I love Sick of It All, Cro Mags etc.

The Clash just because of the sheer variety of their music, although if Gallows keep up the way they are going they could be number 1 someday.

by a few hundred feet, followed by Ramones.
Although, if Joy division our classed as post punk, and that is permitted into the equation then they are ahead of the buzzcocks
edit: my reason for choosing the buzzcocks is that everysong they ever wrote, relates to near everyone. If youve been a teenager, you have lived what theyve written

The Sex Pistols and Motörhead are my main two, as they're the only two I currently own albums of. But I do have a lot of bands that have been listed here on a list of albums I want to get eventually.

I'm not a huge punk fan but if I had to pick a favorite, I'd say The Misfits, Black Flag and Dead Kennedys are all tied.

I've got a few.
Old-school AFI (I love their newer stuff too, but it's not punk) Bad Religion Rise Against Misfits Moss Icon Rancid Jawbreaker Husker Du Indian Summer
There'd be a whole lot more if we were including hardcore and screamo, and I'd say Moss Icon and Indian Summer fit quite nicely into the screamo category, but eh, they're pretty punk too, so whatever.
Also, Spike is a *user was banned for this post*

Also, much love for Devo and Johnny Rotten's other (and superior) band, Public Image Ltd.

F E A R EDIT: I also like The Damned, Misfits, and Gogol Bordello (they count, right?). Bordello is a prime example that punk can still be good, and it's revival won't be a waste

I've got a few, but my favorite is probably The Vandals, at least from 1995 on. One of the tightest, fastest, and absolutely most hilarious bands I've ever heard.

I can't really say which is my absolute favorite, I'm not really a big fan of punk music... but if we're counting post punk and stuff;
The Fall Killing Joke At The Drive In
