If Gulager's directing this...hell yeah! I hope he works his dad Clu into the movie as a grizzled piranha hunter, like Quint.

Watched another newer film last night... Quick Points: Title: The Rig Year: 2010 Grade: D The Plot: As a hurricane rages outside, an oil rig is evacuated except for the absolutely necessary personel. The crew settles in to ride out the storm when a crew member suddnely goes missing. Slowly, they discover that a deadly creature is on board. Surrounded by nothing but raging ocean, their communication severed and no way off the rig, the roughnecks try to survive the stormy night with an unrelenting force of death hunting them down. (Taken and Slightly modified from the IMDB Plot Summary) Review: I like William Forsythe but seeing a newer movie advertising him as the main star usually isn't a good sign. He truly is the best actor in the cast. While there are others with decent experience, he does great with what he is given. So, it feels like the movie wants to build up this aura of "No one is safe" but is too afraid to pull the trigger on their main characters. Which reminds me...small spoilerish rant: {Spoiler}Just so you know William Forsythe is not a main character despite being the headline actor in this thing. That should give you a hint of how a fan of his work is going to react about...oh...35-40 minutes into it. Yeah. You're not Psycho and the director isn't Hitchcock. Killing off the top actor isn't shocking in a monster-killing movie. It's irritating because you realize you're left with the other, less likable characters. Anyway, Forsythe is the head of the rig, his daughter working with him and sleeping with a crew member. This actually has more tension than the monster at the beginning of the movie. To clarify, you know that people you barely know or have dropped random lines to make you sympathize with them are doomed. Just because you take longer to knock them off after showing the monster sneaking into the room, tension isn't building. It's filler. They aren't getting away. We know that. On the other hand, the crew man finding out that the other workers know about the daughter and him just before Forsythe appears and tears him apart for a horrible decision? That's good stuff. Crew Man (I didn't pay attention to names. You wouldn't either.) thinks he's being punished by a father that hates him but it really seems like Forsythe's character is pushing him to think clearer so he can become a better man. It's a nice dynamic that is completely aborted once the cliche monster action starts. Oh, and I suppose I should note the other random storyline of this film. Two brothers work on the rig. One on the rig, the other on computers. They have a random fight where the computer brother yells about how he wants to make his own name and not be in his brother's shadow. All this segment of the movie does is set up a very stupid ending. The characters are 2-D in development and can be summed up as this: Bearded, Tough Guy (Rig Working Brother), Scottish Guy (Who reminded me of Highlander Rory), Michelle Rodriguez Wanna-be Woman (Whose name is...Rodriguez.), Scaredy Cat, Daddy's Girl, Chef, Ex-Acronym, and "Proving Himself." In all, the movie really flounders when it gets to the actual monster action. It almost feels like watching a bad video game. The obvious solution of "Let's lock ourselves in a secure place until help comes after the storm" is quickly ignored over side missions like "We should get a gun" and "Uh-oh, we need a key to unlock the lock on the gun" or my personel favorite "Scaredy Cat is having an ALLERGIC REACTION to a Monster Cut. Go to the Medic Room and bring back Adrenaline." There are plenty of "What?" moments in the film. The Scaredy Cat sees the Monster and barricades himself in his room. When found later he has this dialogue: "I've never seen anything like that....it looked like one of those Mexican Chubra-somethings." Can you point out the error in those two sentences that were barely 10 seconds apart? I didn't cut off part of the quote, just skipped over profanity and whining. I figure it's supposed to be "I've never seen anything like that in real life" but I'm nit picky after sitting through this thing. Also, the Ex-Acronym announces that he works alone and goes off to hunt the monster, somehow discovering that the Chubra-somethings blood is flammable. When he later runs into other characters (On their way to get the adrenaline), he decides not to share this with them. I could go on, but I hope that you get my point. Typical movie mistakes. So to beat a point into the ground: A promising start just flounders as the movie goes on. Grade: D The grade is for the earlier part of the movie that I was enjoying. Dear goodness, 20 minutes into this thing I thought I may have found a surprisingly good movie that would balance interesting characters with a life-or-death situation. Nope. The movie is like your first time skiing. You start off and it's fun, but you mess up and end up rolling head over heel before finishing up and wondering why you even agreed to go...well...maybe not everyone's first time skiing but...shut up. And the ending? {Spoiler} After rescuing Daddy's Girl, who I guess could be called Final Girl as she is seemingly the only one left (Good job building up that "Proving Himself" is maturing only to kill him off, by the way):
Computer Smart Brother and the Main Land Boss come to the boat, s-l-o-w-l-y investigate the blood on the ship (Stopping to touch every puddle to confirm that it is indeed blood). Smart Brother follows a certain blood trail and finds...
His Big Burly Brother. Why is this something to upset me? Well, it could be the fact that the monsters kill everything they get their clawed hands on. They disembowel. They throat slash. They bite. They maul. THEY KILL. But apparently for this one guy they decided to knock him out and drag him to a lower part of the boat. Makes. No. Sense. It's only there for a happy ending for a guy who gets maybe 10 minutes of screentime and his cliche of a Rig Working Brother.
Oh, and then the last Chubra-something appears and gets shot by Main Land Boss who reveals that he was Ex-Acronym's brother (Which somehow let him figure out that the monsters have flammable blood?!). That's completely out of left field. And that's the end of the movie. Ugh.

The Rig - part Leviathan, part Star Crystal...all stupid. Well, AMC Fearfest has descended upon us. As of this moment, they're playing my favorite slasher movie of all time, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter. I've said it before and I'll say it again - despite the fact that I've seen a lot of the films on the AMC horror rotation well over a dozen times and even OWN many of them on DVD, I'll always keep coming back for more. Nothing beats the knowledge that there are other losers watching the same movie at the same time that I am. ;D

They're showing the 9 out of the 11 Jason movies all this week. Why not show Jason X and Freddy vs. Jason is kind of stupid. Sure, Jason X is TERRIBLE, but it's a fun kind of terrible. Either way, I do agree with you. Knowing that there's other people like you and me watching this at the same time as us is pretty awesome. There's people out there in the world! Also cool is the little blurb on the bottom left side of the screen. It's coming. A week from Sunday. The Walking Dead, bitches. Already have it on my DVR schedule. Spike TV showed a clip during the Scream Awards. Everybody who is worrying that the violence is going to be toned down can rest easy, as the clip I saw was Rick shooting a zombie from the other side of the cage, point blank with a .44 Magnum. Yeeeeeahhh! I believe that with the amount of gore they can show on a show like Supernatural (last week, somebody put some chick into a wood chipper), you can show something gorier on cable TV.

One thing that I've always thought would be loads of fun if I didn't work overnights and thus had to sleep all day (you know, kind of like now ) would be to have a "Fearfest Commentary Thread," or something to that effect, which would just be us and the rest of the board at large making riffs/comments on the movies. Not only because it would be fun for us loyal horror fans to amuse each other with our collected comic stylings/know-how, but because I also think it would be interesting to see what some decidedly non-horror nerds would have to say about some of the things in these awesome movies. What made me think of this is that Crispin Glover's dancing scene in The Final Chapter was just on my television screen, which, no matter how many times I see it, always makes me smile. If there is one scene in all of horrordom that belongs in the Smithsonian, that's it, right there. IMO, Glover deserves every bit of the cult fandom he has for this scene ALONE. He takes what is just another one-note slasher film to your average joe schmoe film fan and makes it instantly stand out in your mind for the rest of your freakin' life with those fifteen seconds of random insane dancing.

Again...EVERY first-time viewer of TFC has the instant "WTF?" reaction, followed by disbelief, followed by hysterical laughter, followed by appreciation that Glover went so far above and beyond for this stupid little horror film. Even people who hate horror movies will never forget this one because of this scene. Five gold stars for Mr. Crispin Glover.

Indeed.
BTW, if you want some entertainment, search up "Friday the 13th: In 7 minutes" on YouTube. Oh, how I love when somebody makes a kill count montage. It's pretty much that, in chronological order (FvsJ is before Jason X). I'd share it here, but...I don't wanna get in trouble for the amount of blood/gore in the video.

Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier Confirmed for HELLRAISER Reboot I really wish they would let this die. The idea of a PG-13 Hellraiser aimed at kids is such a slap in the face to horror fans.

If there is anybody that could make this work it is Farmer and Lussier and I very much doubt that it will be PG-13. Also its not like that the Direct-to-video stuff have been any better

I have to say that I'm mightily intrigued by the positive reaction that Paranormal Activity 2 is getting in the internet horror community. Both Dread Central and Bloody Disgusting are singing its praises; this is most unexpected, as I fully anticipated this movie being damn near Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2-esque in its "unnecessary sequel" quotient. Looks like I'm wrong.
Now, with my luck, neither one of my theaters will get this HORROR MOVIE on goddamn Halloween week once again.

I just have that feeling that they're trying to strike lightning in a bottle twice. It never always works.
BTW, bit of a programming note if you have the Biography Channel...a 2-part documentary (2 hours each) of the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise (called The Inside Story) just premiered on the network. Part 1 aired last night, with Part 2 tonight. Here's the interesting thing? A 2-part documentary spanning four hours. I wonder...is Bio airing the Never Sleep Again documentary that came out on DVD earlier this year?

If they are airing Never Sleep Again, but not actually calling it that, it's a pretty dick move on their part. I gotta remember to record that to see what's going on.
