Odd things that scared you as a kid

I was just thinking about how there were really weird things that I was scared of as a kid. I'm sure you all have odd stories and experiences.

-When I was about 4 my mom took me to Showbiz Pizza (80's Pizza restaurant, that had an arcade and an animatronic characters in a band, for those who don't remember it ) and they had an animatronic Statue of Liberty on stage, I thought it was just a statue, until it started talking. It freaked me the hell out, and for several years after that I would close my eyes every time the Statue of Liberty came on TV or anytime I saw it in a book. I was wary of any statue that looked human coming to life for a while after that, too.

-When I was about 8 or 9 there was a total eclipse of the sun, and I was at a friend's house, his mom kept telling us over and over not to look at the sun during a total eclipse because it could blind you. I was so afraid that I hid my face in a pillow, and even after it was over I refused to go outside just in case the eclipse came back I accidentally looked at the sun and went blind.

-This girl I knew when I was about 10 used to tell me that a nutcracker that she had in her room would come to life at night. I argued with her that that was impossible, and that she was lying, but there was still a small part of me that was really scared everytime I saw that nutcracker.

-The Viewer's Choice bumper after a WCW PPV would end

-A book I used to have that showed different types of bugs but it was a childrens book and the bugs had smiley faces and that type of stuff, it still freaked me out as a kid.

The scene in Freakazoid where there is a close-up of the guy gradually turning into a werewolf in addition to a dark background which made it extra creepy.

To this day I have no idea why, but tire swings used to freak me the hell out as a kid. Just an old tire, tied to a rope, and the other end tied to a tree, meant for amusement for the children ... scariest thing in the world to me as a kid.

There was a skit on The Carol Burnett Show (yes, I'm showing my age here) in which snakes were infesting the toilets of the Capitol Building or something like that. I was afraid to sit on a toilet for a good couple weeks after that.

Frogs and lizards. I saw that there were poisinous ones out there and assumed that they all were and avoided them like the plague.

I was always deathly afraid of being poisoned and didn't eat hamburgers during the 90's mad cow scare, and I loved hamburgers as a kid.

I recommend you never watch the Doctor Who episode "Blink" then. I never had a problem with statues before that...


As for me, when I was very little, men with beards.
I remember being about two, and I think my mum had just gone back to work after having me, and being left with a neighbour. There was a guy with a beard on the tv that morning, and I ran through her house screaming my head off and trying to run out of the house.

When I was older, from age 7, I was scared of...walls. There was this awesome kids fantasy series on the BBC called Elidor, and the bad guys in that manage to cross into this world through a wall. I was convinced they were going to get into the boxroom adjacent to my bedroom through the wall, and wouldn't go to sleep unless the door to it was closed. Cos, you know, darkness and a closed door would totally foil them (I was aware of this silly logic at the time, but didn't stop me). Whether by habit or whatever, it's only been the last couple of years I can cope with having that door ajar.

I read the book it was based on again last year - it's still terrifyingly scary to me.

Lobsters. I was scared out of my wits by them. One time my babysitter had two live ones and she let them walk along the floor. I almost jumped out of my skin in terror. I had a nightmare about lobsters as well.

Fireworks. When I was a little kid the scared the hell out of me. Now I love them. (It was the noise that scared me more than anything else).

My aunt. She terrified me.

In the end credits of Dexter's Laboratory there was a clip of him as an old man.

I literally couldn't watch it for ages.

The clown balloon from the parade scene in the 1989 Batman movie. It scared me more how it looked when it swelled a bit when it was emitting the Smylex gas.

Also, the Large Marge scene from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, as well as the evil clown operation scene from that movie.

I used to be scared of this little ceramic leprechaun that my grandmother had in her house near the stairs. I remember being too scared to go up the steps to get toys and having her do it for me.

Strangely enough, I also remember at a young age making a long something or other out of "Linkits(who remembers those?)" and then holding it up to my crotch and running around calling it my electric wiener. I don't know how my poor grandmother put up with all my weird crap.

I was 6 and my family had a little get together where my mom served meat loaf...after we all ate my uncle started feeling sick and ended up having a heart attack...When I went to the hospital to visit him he told me that my moms meatloaf gave him a heart attack...From that moment on I havent eaten meatloaf and I forbid my friends that ever came over to eat my mom's meatloaf lol
