I was unhappy with the job (a manager at Biglots) that I had and decided that I would look for work else where, I found a job, was offered the job and everything. I accepted but was told I had to wait a few days and I would get a phone call to set up a drug test and physical. The new job asked when I could start and I told them I would have to put in a notice at work, and told them I could start on the 18th of October. I go to work the next day (this is still mid September) and tell them that my last day would be on the 15th of October. Fast forward to the first week of October (the 4th to be exact), and I get a call from the job I was leaving for saying that I passed my drug test but do to the results of my physical (bad back), I would not be able to be hired. The doctor that performed the physical recommended me for the job but with restrictions that I shouldn't lift over 50 lbs. So I go to my manager and explain to him what happened and he tells me that my position has already been offered to someone else and they have accepted it. So I decide that I don't want to work my last week and a half and turn in my keys and part ways. Now I have no job and no money and probably won't be getting any unemployment due to me quitting my job, a job that I wouldn't have anyways come the 15th of October.

The better question is "are you evil?"

You're not stupid, things just turned out shitty. What kind of job is it you need to lift more than 50lbs?
I guess what you should have done was make sure you had the new job and just walked from the old one. It's usually better if the person leaving just leaves, rather than shows up for 2 apathetic weeks of work, which usually includes a ton of no shows and calling in sick anyway (not that you'd do this, but others do).
Life lesson, man.

Life lesson, man. It was a job merchandising for a liquor company (Crescent Crown). The thing is I have been "injured" since 2004. This "injury" has not stopped me from working in the past. I did warehouse work with it, I delivered furniture with it. My biggest gripe is, is if my back is so bad, when I got injured on the job in 2004 then why did that doctor say I was fine and let me work.

You're not stupid, it's just a bad incident. Word of advice though, never quit your job until you know for sure that you have a new one. I had a friend of mine that was kind of in the same shoes except he failed his drug test. It actually was a mistake, but after it was all said and done, he didn't get his job back nor did he get the new one.

They don't want you aggravating your injury. Simple as that, my friend. It's a shitty deal, but that's why.

Never quit a job before you 100% have another one. When you're offered the new job, that's when you ask your new employer about giving 2 weeks' notice. You inform the old employer after that, not before. That includes waiting for any results (drug test, physical, background check, etc)

You inform the old employer after that, not before. That's what I did. The new employer apologized about the whole situation and even more so when I told him about what happened with the job I was leaving. He even tried talking to the head of human resources to see if there was anyway around it.

Here's my suggestion to anyone who's leaving a job for another employer.
Get over the idea you owe your current employer any sort of advance notice that you're leaving. They wouldn't give you two weeks notice that you're about to be laid off.
Schedule vacation with your current employer for the first week of your new job. This gives you flexibility as you may discover that you don't like the new employer. If the new job is something you like then you call your old employer to inform them that you've quit, effective immediately. If it turns out that the new job sucks then you return to your old job and call the new one to tell them thanks but no thanks.
I'm sorry to hear that this happened to you; you definitely got a raw deal.
