I've seen several posts about how Miz is just going to be an interim champ, going to have a terrible title reign, etc. So it got me to thinking - how does it usually go for a first-time holder of WWE's most prestigious title?
I decided to stick with the time period covered by this forum, basically, and start with Stone Cold Steve Austin. Here's what I came up with, rounding off a bit here and there (someone will probably find a mistake, but what the hey):
Austin 3 months
Kane 1 day
Rock 1 1/2 months
Mankind 3 weeks
Undertaker 4 1/2 months
HHH 1 month
Big Show > 2 months
Angle 4 months
Jericho 3+ months
Lesnar > 3 months
Eddie Guerrero 4+ months
JBL 9+ months
Cena 9 months
RVD > 1 month
Edge > 1 month
Orton 6 1/2 months
Jeff Hardy 1+ months
Batista 1 week
Sheamus 2+ months
So with a few exceptions, most first-time WWE champs don't hold onto it for very long. Appears that many (maybe even most) who hold it for a short "interim" period on their first reign go on to great or well-above-average careers. So even a trial run with the belt bodes well for most.
As for whether it's going to be a good reign, a bad reign, an average reign, etc., what will probably be in the eye of the beholder. I expect like most heels, Miz will be lucky to successfully defend it (as in win a title match) even once and that he'll be booked as a completely incompetent, cowardly champion - that's how WWE rolls.
If he manages to keep drawing heat and remains as divisive a figure for marks and smarks as he seems to be, then I'd say that's a good thing.
