Hogan, Austin, Rock, HHH, HBK, DX, Undertaker,Bret Hart, Kurt Angle, Mick Foley.
10 of the biggest WWF superstars of all time. Multiple championships, were all main eventing at times when wrestling was really hot.
Out of all of those themes, only 4 of them have vocals in their themes. Hogan was basically the exception to 80's theme music, where it seems like the vast majority was instrumentals. The early to mid 90's was basically the same too with the exception of HBK. Vocals didn't start showing up a lot until the attitude era. And even then, the vocals weren't really emphasized strongly and usually made the themes sound better. Jimmy Hart and Jim Johnson made the vast majority of WWF themes, and they were usually very good. The music CD's sold very well also.
So why is it that now, WWE has started paying outside bands and artists to record theme music for the wrestlers? It helps the bands more than it does WWE. Sure, using a well known artist or even a popular song can work very well when done right, but a huge portion of WWE themes are performed by groups that I had never heard of before, but hear a lot more about now that they've done a WWE theme. WWE is basically paying the bands for the right to give them airplay. When you have musicians that are willing to pay for radio and video plays, being paid to have your song on a show that consistently gets at least 3 million viewers a week has got to be a dream come true. Especially considering that your theme will probably be played on that show every week for several years.
It would just make so much more sense to use the old school style of music. Have Jim Johnson or even hire another in house composer if they had to make most of the themes from scratch. He is very talented in the way that he can make everybody's theme sound unique to them. I believe he would take input from the wrestler themselves sometimes as well. This sort of thing would seriously help newer guys get over.
What do you guys think?

I absolutely agree with you. I much prefer the Jim Johnston style of entrance themes to the generic post-grunge for every wrestler that we have now. Nothing's memorable anymore, and that's really unfortunate.
Obviously there are exceptions here and there, but for the most part, themes are bland as hell nowadays, and I hate it.

Doesn't Johnston still write a lot of the music before it goes to the various bands? I could have sworn I saw his name credited on John Morrison's theme.

Some bands do sing for it, but Jim Johnston is credited for a lot of it. I know Downstait did Miz's, but Jim helped with it, along with Sheamus's, and probably a lot, if not all of the stars.
He's still the guy to be doing the things in the WWE music world.

He also wrote the lyirics for Voices.
Right now I think the only theme songs that probably have nothing to do with him are My Time Is Now (which might be a stretch) and Metalingus.

You know who's theme I marked for like hell every time I heard it? Ken Shamrock's. So badass. Every time I heard it I was like, "Oh man. Someone's gonna die."

Anyway, I have no problems with the WWE getting outside bands to do wrestler's themes, and I don't see why anyone would. The real problem is that they keep getting bands no one cares about to record songs that the WWE composers wrote themeselves anyway. I think "Metalingus" and "We are one" are two of the better themes right now, and that probably has a lot to do with the fact that they were written by some people other than the guys who've been giving us the music for years. WWE just has to do a little looking, that's all.

Yea I know that Johnson basically starts the songs and then the bands basically finish it up, but that's where the problem lies IMO.
Like...compare Batista's original theme to his Saliva theme. Same basic song, just made to sound more like an actual song than an entrance them. And it suffered for it I believe.

Right. Thanks. So the songs in which Johnston was not involved are:
-Metalingus -We Are One -This Fire Burns -My Time is Now (maybe)
Let's see if we can add something else to the list.

Maybe HHH's Motörhead themes? I think Johnston wrote lyrics for "King of Kings," but what about "The Game" and "Line in the Sand" (the Evolution song)?

The riff that plays during The Game while the high pitch guitar sounds and HHH does his water spit was part of a short lived instrumental version of My Time. Line in the Sand is based on Evolve, the song Evolution used before Mötorhead came along.

As a P.O.D. fan, I guarantee he had nothing to do with the creation of "Booyaka 619". Even though the song was written for Mysterio, Rey and Sonny of P.O.D. are real-life friends dating back to high school and the band wrote the song as a favor.
