I've been doing a little thinking over the past 24 hours and I've come to the conclusion the the way I set up this contest is flawed. Therefore, I'm going to scrap this contest and start anew. I think I've come up with a better, more streamlined way to do this.
Here's how the contest works. First I'll list each team in the 4 Major American Sports Leagues (MLB, NBA, NFL & NHL) that has won at least one championship. (No offense to the fans of the teams that got left out but if a team hasn't won at least one title then they can't be called the greatest.)
From that list you select the 8 teams that you believe are the greatest franchises in that sports history. The Elite 8 of each sport if you will. The entire history of the teams should be considered not just where they stand today.
The 8 teams in each league that get the most votes will advance to the next part of the contest.
Once 8 teams from each sport are determined these 32 teams will be placed in a tournament to crown The Greatest North American Sports Franchise Ever.
Now that the 32 teams have been chosen, it's time for the tournament to begin. Every day two teams face off. You choose which team is the better franchise. The winning team moves on to the next round. The losing team is eliminated. The last team left standing will be The Greatest North American Sports Franchise Ever.
Lets start with our first match:
The Boston Red Sox (MLB)

Founded in 1901 as The Boston Americans
Renamed The Red Sox in 1908
