So, it appears the constant taunting of an image board which won't be named by the head honchos of Gawker.com(and thus the head honchos for all the Gawker sites including Kotaku, io9, and Gizmundo) has come to bite them in the ass. Over the weekend it was revealed a group of hackers raided the Gawker source code and has released the data of all the users for all the Gawker sites. Over 1.25 million people. Their user names and e-mails released to the evil masses of the internet. I bring this up because I fear that my info was released by the hackers as well. I've done the usual precautions, changing passwords to all the sites I go to, but even then, I think the bastards even got my e-mail address. If they have, they haven't done anything with it yet, but still. So if any of who are actual users on any Gawker site, this is a heads up.

I fail to see what information stored within is in any way threatening.

I fail to see what information stored within is in any way threatening. You don't see anything wrong with hackers and other cyber-criminals and delinquents having access to over 1.25 million email addresses and passwords?

I question the intelligence of anyone waving a feather duster in an angry bull's face.
Just saying.

What is Gawker?
I'm off to Google but just in case I still don't know what the heck it is when I get back hopefully one of you guys can tell me.
OK I'm back.
Thats what you people get for being obsessed with celebrities.

Ok, I am definitely ignorant to computer stuff such as this, but I have not set up an account with Kotaku or Gizmodo, but I go to their websites almost daily. And 1.25 million is a whole lot of people. Should I be changing my passwords as well?

See that is why you always have different passwords for every website. Or at the very least have a different password for important stuff like email, online banking, and anything like that.

Thats what you people get for being obsessed with celebrities. Gawker is just the parent company. They host several different sites. Kotaku: Video games Gizmodo: Tech Deadspin: Sports Fleshbot: Porn Lifehacker: Tips and Tricks for everyday stuff and several more. Guess its a good thing I've never heard of any of those websites either. Well except for Deadpin which I've never actually been to. Kinda strange since I didn't think I was that far out of the loop. I'm getting old.

Actually, the person claiming responsibility for this says he has NOTHING TO DO with 4chan.
And yes, I know by saying that, I set myself up as their next target.

So main question, why are people unable to prosecute them? Can't anonymity still be traced via isp?

I changed my password on Kotaku as soon as I heard about this. At least the email address connected to the account was my GMail one, which I never use anymore. Though I'll change my password for that, too.

My message board passkeys are all the same but I have different stuff for my ebay, banking and whatnot. I should be ok.

Yeah, I'm not TOO worried because I don't have anything important connected to my Gmail account. I also don't do any real online shopping outside of Amazon and I use a different email address and password connected to both for that.

As for this story, this situation couldn't have happened to a more professional website.

Luckily I've never registered at their sites.
...And I use over six different passwords for various stuff, including one that I expect to run into trouble with.
