I just got my "holiday" schedule at work and see that I am working on Christmas day and on New Years Eve and New Years Day. I am beyond pissed off about this. However there is a silver lining in all of this. I am starting a new job on the 3rd on January. Should I try and "gut it out", and finish up and work the holidays or should I just stay home and relax and wait for my new job. I plan on working up until the day before Christmas Eve ( I am off Christmas Eve). I just have this strange gut feeling that if I tell my family that I have to work Christmas day they won't believe me and will think I don't want to spend time with them. What would you do in my situation?

Go to work. It's just another stupid day. If you want to spend time with your family, what's it matter if it's exactly on the 25th? Or the 31st/1st?

I am old school on this and unless they really earned it(the old employer) you should honor your commitment. If you back out you screw over a former co-worker on your way out the door. It's like a giant F'You to people who were your friends and collegues. Plenty plenty plenty of people work every holliday it is better to have it happen and learn that it isn't the end of the world so that when you encounter someone who is pissed because they had to stay after on a friday for an extra hour, you have the "I worked the hollidays" argument

This was only a temporary job anyways. Also it is highly likely that after the 1st a won't have a job anyways. I have had to work the holidays before so its not that big a deal. My thing is I am working overnight. (10pm - 7am) I also need to get back on a normal sleeping schedule, with the new job I will be working a day shift.

Go to work. Your old employer might tell your new that you skip work for no reason. That does not look good on your resume.

IMHO, unless you're a doctor, fireman or something along that work where there are actually lives on the line, the worlds not going to fall apart if the place closes up shop for the day. I honestly don't see why anyone else should work Christmas Day otherwise (Hell, Boxing Day and Christmas Eve are headscratchers for me. New Years Day I can see, but night shifts on New Years Eve are silly).

The new employer does not know that I am employed right now, the current job is only a TEMPORARY position and come the 1st of the year I will no longer be employed by them anyway, I have already been informed of this.
