I read that verbatim as one prediction of what the big announcement would be.
Absolutely amazing.

Well, when they evolve, we can't eat them because they're composed of poison.
Awesome.
Also, I'm glad to see that this theory was able to be proven on Earth. I mean, I'd always figured it was arrogant to think that all life in the universe must require exactly what we require.

I, for one, welcome our new arsenic bacteria overlords.
That said this does open a whole new door in the discussion around extra-terrestrial life. If strands of life can be formed by what we deem as poison, who knows what could be out there. I agree with what Smarky Smark said above.

Well then, that means there's only one thing to do:
We must destroy every strain of bacteria carrying this strain of DNA to ensure that we remain the dominant lifeforms of the universe.
All kidding aside, I'm interested to see this press conference to learn more

Okay. NASA - finding a new form of life........on Earth?
This is cool news, but I thought NASA would be looking in space for this kind of stuff, not California.

The implications here are astounding. It's always been theoretically possible that a life could follow another path, we never really had proof. This basically shows that quite a number of things could be possible components of life, opening up many worlds to possible life. Okay. NASA - finding a new form of life........on Earth? This is cool news, but I thought NASA would be looking in space for this kind of stuff, not California. They do that, but they generally try to hone their techniques on earth. It's a hell of a lot cheaper, and we at least know we'll find something, even if we don't know what.

"Take it Bacteria - doo doo doo doo"

just what we needed, ANOTHER new Pokemon. And it's a Poison type, that was found in a lake, which means it has to be a Water/Poison type..*looks at below at sig*... O___O Yeah, we're f***ed. On a more serious note, that's pretty damn amazing. I look forward to reading more updates about this, here, at The 'Crap! {Spoiler} *cheap pop*

We've found bacteria in environments such as active volcanos and deep ocean vents, places were life was previously thought to be impossible. From then on, it stood to reason that life, especially bacteria that have an extremely short generation time, could evolve using elements that other forms of life can't.
As for finding life elsewhere, I don't think it was so much arrogance as in "we know everything about life and it's impossible for genetic structures to be different." It was just that we could only search for what we knew it to be. If you take out that basic reference point, you go from searching for a needle in a haystack to a specific raindrop in the ocean.

Seriously, this is pretty amazing.

This is awesome.
I'm also glad to hear that it doesn't need the same things as us to live. I've been saying that this is a possibility for years but no one seemed to get why I thought that.

There's already a lifeform that is more interesting in the depths of the ocean that doesn't even need sunlight.

It already amazes me that we continue to find animals that we didn't know existed, so I'm blown away that we have found a different life form
