Some people hate Earthworm Jim and cite the controls and mechanics as being more difficult to work with than they should. Other people (of course there are always differing opinions) think the game is really enjoyable.
I honestly prefer it to a game like Rayman.
I don't know if it depends on the type of platform you play it on, but on the PC I had no problem.
EJ's got a bad rep, but is it really deserved?

Never knew it had a bad rep... it is an awesome game.
That and Dynamite Headdy were two of my favorites on the Sega Genesis.

I didn't know it had a bad rep either. I think it's an awesome series despite the crappy controls and mechanics.

They're a blast. The graphics for the time, the sheer fun, and the lil bits of humor in every level = awesome.

The first 2 are 2 of my favorite games, always have fun when I play them. I never knew anyone complained about the controls they seem fine to me.

The only game that does deserve bad rep out of the Earthworm Jim series is in 3D.
The best Earthworm Jim game though? Special Edition on the Sega CD.

The 3D was terrible but the first two were great.

The Peter Puppy level in the first game is extremely frustrating, but I wouldn't hear a word against the second, which is an all-time classic from start to finish, particularly The Villi People.

Funny how EWJ was being hailed as TEH BEST GAME EVAHZ upon its initial release- it's just the changes in game mechanics over the years that make it seem dated (I never played 3D so I don't know how bad it is). The humor definitely holds up, though.
Also, seconding how awesome Dynamite Headdy was.

This guy [actually a reupload on a different channel] badmouths it through the last half part of the first level.

The first two games were really good and cool. Great music, lots of humor, and did allow a test of player capabilities.
Then I played "3D"... and it sucked. The boss fights were really annoying, as they involved grabbing 100 items while keeping your ass in-check instead of fighting the boss, and the graphics were disgusting. Not "Bubsy 3D" horrible, but it was bad.

This guy [actually a reupload on a different channel] badmouths it through the last half part of the first level. Language Warning: This guy hates everything. I used to sub to him because I thought he was funny and only partway whiney. Turns out he's a little bitch. I watched a few of his live feeds and he would constantly comment (very rudely, mind you) about what people were saying in the live feed, often pausing for ten whole minutes to complain about what people were talking about or something youtube snubbed him on, or even the over 9000 meme. Sometimes he'd even capture and repost those rants, like they were some proud statement people would rally around. I take what IGN says with a grain of salt, I take what Cloud8745 says with a whole container of Morton's. I honestly put this man below Irate Gamer and navgtr. Now, back to the main event. Rant done... Earthworm Jim is a five-star example of what presentation and characters can do for a game. If it was the same game, same gameplay, but presented normally then it's only decent at best. I'm not talking crap on it, or at least not trying to. I love the series myself. It is because the characters are memorable, the content of the game itself is so unique and matches well with the Rocco's Modern Life and Ren and Stimpy style of comedy and presentation, while still being unique in itself and being well-executed. And for that it does truly deserve all it's praise, and it the fact that it's difficult (and not bullshit-difficult), and gameplay that works (but isn't perfect) makes it more well known than just for the content.

I have never beaten the first one since I never got passed the water level in the the glass tube. However, the second one was a lot easier.
