In the process of packing and moving.. HUGE pile of trash out front and I hear noises. Peek out the window and see a pick up truck, a man and a boy.. maybe 10 years old going through my garbage. WTF Really ?
Has anyone else gone garbage digging ?

This is weird to you? You must live in a pretty nice area. :-P
I'd find it weirder to NOT having people going through my garbage honestly.
I've always lived in apartments and it's just the norm here for there to be a cycle of bums diggin through the trash bins outside.
And no, even with as poor as I've been from time to time I've never been that damn poor.

Not in several years, but yes. But this was at an actual set of dumpsters, not outside someone's house.
Whoops, read that wrong. I saw it several years ago, haven't actually engaged in it.

no I live in a crappy area. Not homeless people. I dunno, Dawn said she's seen people going through the trash before looking for metal, wood and copper. I've just not witnessed it.

This is a part of why I shred or otherwise destroy any letters I put in the trash.
That, and if the culprit had a handlebar mustache and was possibly an owl, we may have your culprit.

I don't know how it is now, but for years in my parent's neighborhood ( which is a pretty nice upper middle class area) there was basically an unwritten rule that come about 10:30 on garbage night this guy and his kid would drive down the street and go through everyone trash looking for scrap metal and apparently anything else that interested him. At one point someone else started coming around earlier in the night to rummage through the trash and one of the neighbors got pissed about it and chased him out of the neighborhood.

I've seen it plenty when we've been doing buiding work or an appliance breaks down.
We don't care as long as someone gets some use out of it

I've never personally done it, but a friend of mine found a perfect condition guitar in someone's garbage so I guess there are some benefits.

We have at least 3 guys who canvas our neighborhood weekly, and on other days they hit up neighborhoods with different pick up days, I have seen them so I know for sure.

WTF... must be a North American thing, never even really heard of it over here. Even us Scots must be too classy for that! Anyone touches my trash without permission and ill thrash them upside the head Never really see homeless folks either, in my area at least the respite available to those who are homeless isn't bad at all (designated hotels, hostels, etc.). Only time i see them is in big cities like Edinburgh, Glasgow and Newcastle!

Around here they basically look for cans and bottles to recycle.

I have gotten so many things out of people's trash over the years. And I'm not talking crappy stuff either. I've gotten a Deep Freeze, a couple fridges, a dish washer, bikes, dressers, tables, other random furniture, a whack of speakers and stereo equipment, about 12 TVs one of them being a 52" console cabinet. all kinds of stuff. I fix it up and either keep it or sell it. If I had put everything I made from doing this into an account and never touched it I'd easily have $5,000 by now. (that's including taking recyclables)
$5,000 bucks for other people's trash aint to shabby if you ask me.
