I have the opportunity to go to their very creatively named "Night of Champions" event this Thursday at WVUP, and I was wondering if anybody knows anything at all about MWA. Their card, as posted absolutely everywhere on campus, is: *MWA Heavyweight Title Match Champion Ryan Edmonds vs. Open Invitational Challenge *Loser Retires Street Fight Mike Howerton vs. Cuban Assassin *Also appearing in action: Chris Taylor, D.F.Z., Jock Samson, and Ryan Mitchell. Mountaineerwrestling.com Tickets are $10, $8 for students. I've never been to an indy event before. Do you think it's worth it, and do any of the names ring any bells?

If it's $8-10 and you have nothing better to do, go check it out. I have no idea who any of those guys are except for the Cuban Assassin(assuming it's the same one from years back)
You may get some unintentional hilarity in the ME with an open challenge. Actually I think that you already did; how can it be both an open and invitational challenge?

I worked with Mike Howerton during my days in the AWA. He had some good ideas. Why he hooked up with Dale Gange, I'll never know. As for the active roster, the two people I'm familiar with are Chris Taylor and Ryan Mitchell. (Both are regulars at NWA East/PWX, which is my second favorite Indy fed out there.) Taylor's base gimmick is that of an Ozzy-style metalhead, but I haven't seen him actually work it in years. More often than not, he ends up playing the role of the "Pittsburgh face" - the "tough as nails" hometown bad ass that ends up saving the day. The role suits him well. As for Mitchell, the man is going to be a huge star someday. I guarantee it. It's obvious the minute he steps into the ring. Think "early Shawn Michaels," only without the attitude. (The comparison to Michaels shouldn't be surprising. His first gimmick in PWX was that of HBK's biggest fan.)
So all in all, if you have the $10, go. You can do a hell of a lot worse when it comes to indy wrestling.

I moved out out of the area and haven't seen MWA in at least two years. They've undergone a lot of changes, so I don't know what to tell you about their show. Parkerburg wrestling is the bottom rung of the ladder, so you might see some good stuff, and you'll likely also see some guys just getting experience. It'll probably be a good experience.

It's no NWA Tri-State. We'll never get Zac Vincent or Aaron Draven back, or Vance Desmond. But at least we still have Team GAY. Yes, I'm being serious.

Tri-State was just on the verge of becoming great and then . . . ? Maybe too many young guys in one locker room? I don't know.
MWA worked with Brian Logan for a bit, but I think that ended up hurting them. Then, I was seeing Jeff Cannon and some OCW workers on their posters, but maybe that association is ended? Mike Howerton seems like he wants to network and build up an alliance, but is finding out that wrestling promoters are independent and hard to work with.

You weren't at the MWA shows with Logan, were you? When he "retired" when he lost to Howerton I thought fans were gonna jump in the ring.

Ah, Yeah, I did a few times, but like I said, I moved to Asia and haven't been "in the know" on MWA for awhile. I know he was at the center of some drama backstage and some workers left. But, overall, yeah, I'm just inferring and guessing.
