Now I was a lil kid at the time and didnt see too much of the Iron Shiek in his heyday but I knew who he was. So I was watching the 1992 Royal Rumble a few days ago when Col. Mustafa comes out. Now at least with the Sultan they changed his look so it wouldnt be obvious that it was a new character played by a previous guy. What was the time difference between Shieky Baby's last appearance and his return as col. mustafa? Did they bother explaining the name change or why he was a colonel all of a sudden??
Cuz the appearance was pretty much the same. No voice change, mustache was still there. Even his boots had the hooks on them.
So yea.....

Sheik was out by 1987, after a drug bust with Hacksaw Duggan because he was expendable really, so roughly 4 years. Perhaps they just assumed by bringing him back with his old name would bring negative publicity, but I can't imagine anyone not knowing it was the same guy

Not to mention he was an IRANIAN playing an IRAQI, Guess Vince McMahon can't tell the difference between the two(Iranians aren't even Arabs).

They also publically acknowledged that Mustafa was the Iron Sheik in his debut.

I'm sort of shocked that the Iron Sheik had no issue playing an Iraqi military gimmick given that he is Iranian. Early 1990's jingoism was crazy!
I did dig the fact that the Col Mustafa costume was available on WWE Legends Of WrestleMania.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

You're talking about the man who had a samoan play a Japanese sumo wrestler. and an Italian play a Native American. And a samoan play an Arab in a mask., a Puerto Rican as a ninja, etc. Yokozuna was always billed as being from Polenesia (spelling?) though.

They started billing Yokozuna from Japan towards the end of his heel run, but most of the time they billed him from either Polynesia or the South Pacific Islands.

It was no secret Col. Mustafa was the Sheik but I see no reason for that gimmick at all. General Adnan was Sheik Adnan El Casey in the AWA and he and the Iron Sheik joined forces in the AWA very briefly.
I found out Yokozuna was Samoan from a Samoan guy. I worked with one of his cousins at the time and that's how I found out all those Samoans wrestlers were related and based in the San Francisco bay area.

Yokozuna used to come to the ring waving a Japanese flag. For all intents purposes he was "from" Japan.

And a lot of the family that wasn't in San Fran actually lived in or around Allentown, PA, where Afa had his wrestling school. My mom worked as a manager at a McDonald's there and they were always the most polite people, which really caught her off-guard considering the "savage" characters they played.

The Iron Sheik was in WCW for a time as well during his exile from the WWF. (Think he had a PPV match against Sting once.) I remember him at a house show and we were seated second row in the corner; the Sheik climbed up and spit on us doing his "Iran! Num-bah One! USA! Hock, poo!" (We told my dad the Sheik spit on us and he was like, Ooh, lucky! My dad was a big Iron Sheik fan, just based on his calling everyone by name backwards: Slaughter Sergeant, Gene Mean, etc. Iron Sheik was called "Sheik Iron" in our household.)
