You know what video game I'd love to play? Some kind of RPG/sandbox game set in medieval times (not that I'd mind an equivalent set in more modern times), and very dark and gritty. I'd also like as much customization and exploration as possible (hte more side quests, the better). Something similar to games like Fable or Risen, but with a very dark touch. Not that it should be overly serious, though.
Does anyone know of any game that would match this description (or something approaching it)?

It's pretty close to what I have in mind, actually, but I'd prefer something more fantastic. You know, with zombies, magicians, goblins and stuff. Also, Assassin's Creed has more of a renaissance feel. I'm really looking for a middle-ages setting. With huge-ass castles, knights armor and/or chainmail and all that stuff. The Elder Scroll series also seems good, but if it's as close to Fallout 3 as people say, it's not quite what I'm looking for. Come to think of it, what I'm talking about would be somewhere between Elder Scrolls and Assassin's Creed. With a touch of Mortal Kombat-style grittiness.

I think I'll give it a try. Thanks for the advice, man! And if you guys think of other titles, don't hesitate to suggest them!

Dragon Age Origins and Oblivion are both badass and are probably as close to what you are wanting as possible.

Dragon Age isn't a sandbox game, but it does fit the "dark and gritty fantasy" bit.

I always see people play in the first person view but I don't think it fits swordfights all that well (unless we're talking about Hexen/Heretic ).

PS3 has the monopoly on these if you're looking for console games. Two off the top of my head that you should rent/check out: - Demon's Souls- White Knight ChroniclesBoth PS3 exclusives. Also if you've never played it before, Vagrant Story for the PSOne (and on the PSN for PS3 as well) is pretty identical to what you describe in the OP.

Wow, I can't believe I forgot Demon's Souls.
Yes, that's a very dark fantasy game. It's not sandbox, it's a dungeon-crawler RPG. It's also notorious for being insanely hard.

Sadly, I don't have a PS3.

For all your dark and gritty fantasy RPG needs, there's The Witcher.

It may not be an RPG (But when games like Assassin's Creed get mentioned it shouldn't matter) but what about Thief: Deadly Shadows? It is set in medieval times (with steampunk elements), you're free to wander around the city, there are sidequests, the world is dark and gritty, it has magic, zombies, ghosts and other supernatural monsters

I hope gog.com works on those someday as it seems to be right up their alley. Everything you have mentioned is available in World of Warcraft Heh, paying every month for the high privilege of playing a game I already bought and being called a thief if I don't just doesn't do it for me.
