I don't know why they dislike the President there (I know nothing of Egypt's political system) but damn, when they don't like a guy they make it known!

That part world is better known as Arab World because of the Arabic Language. Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Morocco Tunisia are all in Africa if your basing it on Continent. Rest Arab World Iraq, Jordan, Iran etc are in Asia and also double up as the Middle East. The whole population the Arab World is about 350 Million. *I think also Comoros is an Arabic Country but don't hold me on that and that's also in Africa Except the problem with "Arab world," is that you cut out Turkey, Israel and Iran. Now, you can probably get away with excluding Israel, but Turkey and Iran have been the regional powers for a while, and neither speak arabic. In fact, the Egyptians may not be happy with being called Arabs, depending on what week it is. It's not useful to discern a difference between North Africa and the Middle East, despite whatever a geography textbook says, they are part of the same civilization, and have been for a very long time.

I've been busy and kind of out of the loop lately and I hadn't even heard about this until I got a message from my mom who was actually going to have the opportunity to travel to Egypt before these protests broke out. I don't know much about the situation either, but according the article I found their president has apparently been in office for the past 30 years if that's any indication of anything. Other than that just let me say that my heart goes out to the people of Egypt. From the news it looks like all hell has broken loose. Imagine being in the thick of that.

Yeah, Mubarak has been in power since 1981 when he took control after Anwar el-Sadat was assassinated. Elections have been held periodically, but given he's been in power so long, kind of hard to say how fair the elections have been. Clearly the people of Egypt feel it is time to make a change. The question is will Mubarak go far enough for them. I do think there is still room and time to change things peacefully, given the protests, while destructive, haven't been calling for blood. Let us hope a level of peace and respect is maintained or this can get ugly in a hurry.

yep. So my g/f buddy was just telling us that he is held up in his apartment due to the tear gas. And people are being killed by the military just for leaving to get something at the store.
Internet access is now back in Egypt.
Also. The President has fired all his men. But the people of Egypt want HIM out.
