Our local buses (Metrobus, St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada) have been on strike for 79 days now.
To compensate, Metrobus sold taxi vouchers at half-price (I bought $100 of taxi rides for $50).
Have you ever had problems like this on your local public transportation (buses/trains)? Have your systems been on strike for longer than 79 days in recent memory?

Luckily no, but when I lived in California, it sure felt like they did.

Couldn't they hire scabs and license them to drive the buses?
Or does the people who are on strike own the buses too?

79 day? Wow. I can't imagine a transit strike lasting that long. Is public transit heavily used in St.John's?

Not like bus drivers are some hard to replace set of skilled workers. If they want to strike, I'd say "Screw them" and hire people who need jobs. Get them licensed and let them drive the buses. Income back into the city that is being unused right now without the transit system running.

A transit strike would absolutely cripple Chicago. We already have the worst traffic as it is (not just speaking offhand here, studies showed it recently)

Agreed. I can't imagine a CTA shut down or even a slow down. The City literally could not function without it.

The strike is over! Service scheduled to return January 31. Offering free rides from Jan 31 - Feb 14, $1 rides from Feb 15-28, then back to normal $2.25 after that.
Total: 89 days (if all goes well)
