Im not glorifying drinking at all its just a question that kind of puts me off...It seems like almost every Holiday or a major event like the Super Bowl is just an excuse for people to get hammered? My facebook is filled with people after people all around proclaiming about the drinking they are going to be partaking in and not even about the game? We dont celebrate St. Andrews Day communitively yet American's will use St. Patrick's Day as an excuse to drink? 4th of july, Cinco De Mayo, Halloween, New Years Eve...Even the World Cup...
Do other cultures have these same habits of using important events and dates for things like this?

Its even more hilarious to me that the Super Bowl takes place on a Sunday so most people will go in to work the next day completely hung over and its just naturally accepted and like New Years almost expected

It's something that's been happening for centuries.
History is full of festivities that are celebrated with flagons of mead and ale...jugs of wine...barrels, even.

The people that brag about getting wasted is what's silly to me. Just like announcing you got hammered as if it's some sort of feat.
I can maybe sorta see it if you're under-age to try and appear 'cool' or whatever, but I've worked with dudes my age ( early thirties) that'll talk about it like it's something they achieved. I mean shit, if you wanna drink, fine. If you wanna get sloshed- so long as you're not driving, that's cool too. No one else cares.

I definitely understand that but it just seems to me like here in America we celebrate other country's cultural celebrations and bastardize them to get drunk...

No one else cares. exactly...its just strange to me that people do act like its such an amazing thing that they drank so many beers and made themselves sick...I see the same thing even on a game like World of Warcraft where 13 year old kids will get drunk on the game and go on and on about it

Try living in the UK. Every Weekend is an excuse to drink. Came here to say this. Funnily enough we don't really celebrate St. George's Day but will go all out for St. Patrick's Day. Never quite understood that one.

Every place drinks its not just the US lol yeah I know I was just saying that thought it was a little odd that we use any excuse we can here and was basically confused because I dont think other countries get hammered because of our Independence Day or anything...Maybe its just because we are essentially a nation of immigrants

Absolutely hate people moaning about how hungover they are, then doing it every weekend, and complaining again. Either handle your drink, or accept the consequences.

Bah, try being an Australian. That's a culture that will take any chance to knock back a few.
Plus you guys should have the Superbowl on a Saturday like we Aussies do with the AFL Grand Final.

How is something fun if you can't remember it? And further... Well, congratulations, blacking out means that you consumed so much of a poison that your brain stopped forming new memories. That's something to brag about, for sure.

and yes i understand the alcholism is a serious issue and those with the condition should not drink. I was mainly joking. Still I love the drink and in general hang out with those who also do. After all this is Wisconsin.

That's something to brag about, for sure. If you can't remember it, it never happened, thus giving you impunity to do whatever you want! That's the way it works. Really. As a total binge drinker, and former borderline alcoholic, I can assure you that this is a worldwide thing. Booze is a quick and relatively cheap escape, that is mostly legal and tends to come with socialising. As with anything, mēdén ágan, but meh, booze is tasty.

I was curious and polled a friend on this very subject and his answer was
"Every day is a Holiday and a reason...I like to call it Be an Australian Day"
People never cease to amaze me
