I was wanting to watch a Youtube video, but it keeps trying to get me to link my Youtube account with a Google account. So after spending 10 minutes trying to figure out what the security code said, it wanted me to enter my phone number to verify by text message. Is this legit, I was afraid it was some kind of scam, although it says https, and it is google, I don't want them to have my phone number. It won't let me get to where I can just watch a video. I just want to watch a video. What's the deal with this? Is everybody getting this on Youtube?

It seems to be so they don't have to manage two vast databanks of user accounts. Makes sense from their perspective, I'd hate to have to sort that out and pay for the server space to contain it all. I didn't get the phone number thing though, that's kind of weird. Maybe depends on region?

So do those of us who don't have Google accounts have to go through this?

Idk...I can still search for and watch videos, I just can't access my account anymore. Kinda sucks to lose my Favorites list and stuff, but oh well, no big loss.

*shrug* This is why I did it when it asked about... oh, what was it, six months ago? I mean, hell, I just switched it to the proper gmail account (accidentally set it to my mom's email address) and was never asked for a phone number. If you've got a gmail address, you shouldn't have an issue and can just hook it up that way.
But hey, that's just me. =P

It sucks, but I never did get asked for a phone number.
