Yes, it's time again for one of my occasional "why I think the WWE has problems" rants.
It's ridiculous. They're petrified to let any of their established stars look weak. They never let them lose cleanly, they refuse to let them truly put over young and up and coming talents, and they won't let them get the heat on any of them for any time longer than week or two.
Yes, they let Sheamus put Triple H out of commission, but before they had Triple H pin the guy in their first match. Logically you would think that would be the end of the feud. After all, the babyface came out as triumphant.
They then did the same thing with Rey Mysterio and Alberto Del Rio. Here they actually did things right with Alberto pinning Rey in their very first match and putting him on the shelf the following week. True, they could have held off on that, but it's not there's anything wrong with it. But then they had Rey Mysterio come back and get his win back. At least here Alberto has a legitimate claim for a rematch. But that quickly degenerated into the two feuding for months.
Heck, just look back at Sheamus or Jack Swagger's respective world title reigns. Swagger at least got to pin Randy Orton relatively clean during his reign whereas the cleanest win Sheamus over got over someone who wasn't a midcard guy was shoving Cena through a table in a victory that the announcers pounded into your head was nothing more than a fluke. Yeah, because that's how you make a new main eventer.
Swagger didn't fare much better. he was made to look weak because they diluted his issue with Rey Mysterio so they could have Kane accuse him of putting his brother out. So on the one hand you have him putting out a top babyface while at the same time he's cowering before another.
Of course that's nothing compared to what they did with Nexus. They took all the steam out of that feud in all sorts of different ways.
1. Even though they beat Cena down brutally the week before, a beating that logically should have put him out for the months, the next week Cena is shown coming out to the ring perfectly fine. Way to make that beating mean something, guys.
2. They had Nexus being run off by the midcard, including SANTINO MARELLA, an utter comedy jobber. I don't recall the NWO being run off a few weeks after they emerged by Glacier or Evolution by Rico.
3. They had Nexus interfering for three months straight in pay per views, although they really made to look more like a minor annoyance then anything else. Case in point, a REFEREE stood up to them and received absolutely no punishment afterwards.
4. They had them lose at Summerslam. It's been brought up many times I'm sure, but this was one of the biggest mistakes they could've made. It was made even worse when they had the equivalent of a rematch later on and actually let Nexus win. If you were going to do that anyway then what was the point of having them lose before?
5. Other than Wade Barrett and Skip Sheffield, who unfortunately got sidelined by an injury, none of them were made to look very strong. Gabriel was at least booked as semi competent for awhile until he accidentally hurt Orton, but the rest were basically just treated as thugs who were only good for running in and beating down guys. McGillicutty and Harris haven't fared any better since they joined. Can you recall the last time on television either of them won a match?
It's just silly. Why are they so afraid to let these up and coming guys get any credibility? What's wrong with having. say, Dolph Ziggler or Cody Rhodes pin Cena or Mysterio? Is that truly going to be the end of the world? Are buyrates going to plummet any further? Are television ratings going to tumble downwards?
Oh wait, they did let Cody Rhodes pin Mysterio. And of course he was simply beaten by Morrison the very next week with no mention of the fact. Way to make that mean something.
The latest angle involving Cena is simply icing on the cake. They're so terrified that they won't even keep Cena off television for ONE WEEK. What's even the point?! Why even do the storyline if you're not going to actually commit to it? Why even bother if all you're attempting to get out of it is a week's worth a heat. Of course they could've made it mean something if they had booked the previous Cena: Nexus Slave angle a bit better. For one they should have never let Barrett and Cena touch for months. Can you imagine if they had booked Hulk Hogan as Roddy Piper's slave and had him give him the leg drop of doom during the very first month?
They've been saying for a long time that they need to create new stars, but they're afraid to give any of them any help in order to get there. They either have to be good in with somebody high up in the company, such as Sheamus and Drew McIntyre to an extent, or simply have enough ability to get heat or improve so much that they can't help but notice, such as Wade Barrett or The Miz.
The bottom line is this: WWE Main Eventers are not that fragile. They can afford to take a loss every now and again. It doesn't even have to be clean every time. Just stop treating them like they are going to shatter to pieces any time they lay down for a three count.
