How often did a champion have their name on the nameplate back in the pre-WWE days?
Was it even a nameplate or was it changed to one?

I'm not sure if there were many, if any. Champs generally got a custom belt for their reign prior to the "WWF Winged Eagle" Belt era. Hogan had this "custom" belt early in his reign, the final custom belt before the long era of the classic WWF Belt. www.411mania.com/siteimages/hogan86belt_16705.jpg[/img] Slaughter & warrior each had custom strap colors of their WWF belt, but the design of the faceplates were the exact same.

Anyhow, WCW did use nameplates for the better part, if not all of the 90s.

Yeah, pretty much everyone who held the belt had a nameplate. I thought it was part of the "gimmick" of the belt, since none of the other NWA/WCW titles had a nameplate.

I remember a PWI cover with Sting holding the belt with Flair's name on it (would have been right after he won it the first time).

They where changed when there was a new champion most of the time. I say most because The first time Hogan won his during the NWO era. He spray painted NWO on it. But never changed it. It said Giant for a good while. Even was brought up by the Giant a few months later on a Nitro. Started to build up to Giant leaving the NWO and getting his shot at the first Sold Out.

True, the plate did retain the old wearers name sometimes for plot, or because the new champ was only a transitional one.

Does anyone remember if they changed it for Ronnie Garvin for the short time he had it?

Does anyone remember if they changed it for Ronnie Garvin for the short time he had it? Nope. The original nameplate was made by the same folks who made the belt (Crumrine) and it was made unlike other belts. Crumrine made rodeo belt buckles so it wasn't an etched or cast belt, but truly hand crafted. When WCW started making nameplates to replace Flairs, those were simple etched nameplates.

Thank you Mr.Snow you are as usual a bastion of information on wrestling belts. I read a run up on the original Big Gold Belt once but it was put out by WWE magazine so who knows if it was acurate or not. Anyway all I can recall was that it was hand made by a silversmith in KC I want to say but am unsure. The article went on to talk about Crokcet buying the belt for like 30,000 or something. Thing of beauty and I will die inside a little if WWE stops using thier replica. I believe Flair said he gave the original BGB to HHH prior to the big match they had on Raw in Greenville in 03

Flair gave HHH a later generation Big Gold. The original Big Gold didn't cost 30 grand, closer to 10 grand. But that was 1985 dollars, so if it were to be made today who knows what it would cost. And who said that TNA didn't contact me? I have no desire to make a belt that I didn't design, especially when the design handed to me is hideous.

Well for what it's worth I have always felt that an artist should be free to design his own art and after looking at some of your work it is art. So I do not blame you for turning them down. I like the purple strap but the centerplate is um...well..I dunno man
