Last Monday Barney met his father, Jerome. Jerome mentioned he had a daughter, "Carly" who is in college. At the end of the season, Ted will be the best man for someone at a wedding, it is said that at this wedding he meets the women who he would marry.
My theory is that the wedding will be Barney's, Ted will meet Carly and she will be the one who he marries.
Clue to corroborate this theory.
Ted says in the season 5 opener that the wife was in the classroom that day. Carly is in college, so it is a possibility.

and after he finishes telling the story, we cut back to the 'present' of the sitcom, and we see that Ted is telling his story to a pair of skeletons who've wasted away being forced to listen to their dad prattle on about pointless shit that has f*** all to do with how he actually met their mother for six goddamn years.

As far as I'm concerned, until I'm proven otherwise, Ted's wife is Barney's sister.

I think it's more lucky that they got Neil Patrick Harris to play the part rather than the character. He was always intended to be a "comic relief" type person. NPH just plays him so amazingly that he's become legend.............. wait for it.......... that theory is pretty good. Makes sense. Let's see if they debunk it.... also, they know who the mother is and they're just waiting... dary.

My theory is it might be his Ohio's buddy wife. I don't know I'm just guessing. She's brunette like the daughter and she had pointless screen time for like five seconds oh and she was curvy with a average build! She was possibly the only curvy women in that show in her 20's - early 30's! The weight was the distraction so the people would think nothing but in reality she was the mother the whole time! Or maybe the mom was a extra in the first episode. Nah it's probably the first thing.

The "Barney's sister" theory has been mentioned in other fansites, so you're not alone. It wouldn't be too farfetched at this point, but all it would take is for her to show up on screen with the rest of the gang ahead of time. Some people actually thought Nora would be the mother, but that was debunked the moment she showed up at McClarrens with the gang.
Punchy's wedding seems to be a red herring, with the main idea being that he isn't close enough friends with Marshall to have him be a groomsman.
Also keep in mind that Ted made a deal with Robin to be her best man at her wedding. Still, the way things are going now, it looks like the wedding will likely revolve around Barney.

My theory:
They won't introduce the mother until the ratings start to drop.

"Wait, why isn't the garbage taken out? All right, now you're gonna hear the story about Marshall's dad dying!" "Jeez Dad, not even a spoiler alert?"

i'm convinced the mother is victoria AND NO ONE IS GOING TO CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE NO MATTER HOW WELL THOUGHT OUT THIS THEORY IS I can give you a convoluted sense of hope. In "Dopplegangers" Ted says we all become dopplegangers of ourselves eventually. Therefore, he could meet a "Doppleganger" Victoria later on, thereby not actually having met who she became earlier. I guess that makes sense. That said, I'm 99% sure they've said it's not Victoria. But I share your pain. I really wish Victoria was the mother too.

Strangely, I thought Ted's relationship with Stella was his best one. I don't know why, but it felt "right". And I only caught like 8 minutes of Monday's episode because SOMEONE WHO WAS NOT WANTED CAME IN AND DISTRACTED ME THE WHOLE TIME. >_>

She only plays uptight, demanding WASPS that somehow everyone is in love with, despite how awful they are to people. Well, aside from 2nd Becky, but that was a long time ago.

But Stella hated Star Wars. She can't be perfect for Ted as that's a damning imperfection. I wonder how the Zoe relationship's going to end.
