The production of the album sounds really weird to me, but it does kick ass. As already said I think it combines the best of both worlds of Metallica, staying true to their roots but making it all catchy and different at the same time.

Kev, I respect your opinions, but there's really no reason to call people who like St. Anger/Death Magnetic/buttever not real Metallica fans. I love the shit out of Metallica. Old, new, in between...doesn't matter. They're an amazing band.
If I'm somehow not a "real fan" simply because I like their post-80's work...whatever. I'm not a real fan, then, I guess.

To me it sounded like the new Metallica trying to sound like the old Metallica. It was okay, and it still suffered from Metallica's habit of making songs long for the sake of making them long.

I'm like...so beyond over this Old Metallica vs New Metallica thing, what the hell is this, 1997? Hell, stuff people call "new"Metallica is friggin old now. What frustrates me are the ones that do the whole "Cliff was the heart and soul of Metallica" and "Cliff would never have let them do this" crap, many of em are too young to even remember Metallica when Cliff was alive. Hell, I'm almost 31 and I am for, the dude died when I was like 6. And the whole "they sold out!" thing, and saying it backfired is the most insane BS I ever heard. Yeah, selling millions of albums and having each album debut at number 1 since 1991, and doing sold out tours world wide is a MAJOR backfire. Back on topic... Death Magnetic rocked, saw em live, front row for that tour. Best band I've ever seen live (which is close, as I saw Motorhead recently, and that was epic as hell as well). And just to show off, best pic I got during that concert:

Sweet pic! Longtime Metallica fan too and I agree. I like them. I liked Load/Reload/etc though I can understand why others might not but don't EVER call me a fake fan or any bs like that. Besides which, James himself has said that if Cliff were alive, their "new" sound would've happened sooner. James probably knows Cliff better than the rest of us...
PS-guy who's name I don't feel like looking up. Your arguments against Metallica could be taken a lot more seriously if you didn't throw in petty insults like Load (of Crap)...

believe it or not, i think most of Metallica's best work was POST-"Black Album." And i also think "St. Anger" is their best, better, oddly, than "Load" or "Death Magnetic," and i love both of those albums as well.

I guess I'm a fake fan also since I liked Death Magnetic and my favorite album by them was AJFA which came out after the Burton Golden Era.

I didn't like it, but that doesn't mean other people can't.
They're businessmen just as much as they are musicians. They want to be rich and famous, and they're having no problems with those goals.

I'm confused how hating everything beyond like 1988 makes someone a "real" fan. If anything, wouldn't the fans that have stuck by the band during all eras be the real ones? I don't get the hate on trying new things... yes, KEA through AJFA are thrash metal masterpieces, and I love them..but people change as the grow up. You can't stay 20 years old and pissed off forever.

It's dull. They're not awful, but it's really time to change it up, at least a little bit.

I must be the fakest Metallica fan there is because I only started listening to them in 2009, quickly buying all their albums after listening to Death Magnetic.
I guess i'm unique because I didn't grow up listening to them, so I'm always left out of all the old vs new debates. I find it refreshing that the band's been around for 30 years, and instead of doing the same exact thing year after year, they have different eras.
I would say And Justice For All is my favorite album, with Death Magnetic following.

There's your problem, chief. I'm going to be honest and say that I'm not hearing a tremendous difference here. But then, I'm just listening on laptop speakers at the moment, and even my good headphones aren't that good...so perhaps this isn't the best environment to get what they were trying to accomplish.

The only Metallica song I knew for YEARS was "Enter Sandman". I didn't heavily get into them until around 2004, right near the end of high school.

Death Magnetic SUCKED. But I'd rather listen to it than St. Anger. Which sounded like it was recorded in a coffee can up Lars Ulrich's ass. Metallica died on a dark road in Sweden in '86. Lars and James always drove the band, even when Cliff was there, their musical direction still would've gone down the same path. Not that that's a good thing, mind you, I'm a huge Metallica fan, who is hugely swayed towards their 80s stuff!

Death Magnetic is an album that will probably never get the credit it deserves.
Because too many so-called Metallica fans are just....ucchhh.

Being a Metallica fan has no relation to how long you've liked em... as long as you're a fan now, you're part of the family. Usually at live shows James will have people who are at their first Metallica show cheer, and if the others boo his usual response is "Well, they're here NOW, that's all that matters"
