Did anybody realize the continuity problem with the back story in the angle ? Bret and Piper were billed as childhood friends. At Wrestlemania 8, Piper even cut a promo in which he recalled the times he spent at the Hart house as a kid. Yet, Piper's gimmick was that of a man who was born and raised in Scotland. So when during Piper's childhood youth was he taking trips over the ocean to spend time with Harts in Calgary ?

I remember them being vague about when exactly Piper spent time with the Harts in Calgary. I think you could justify it as Piper coming over as a teenager to North America to try his hand as a wrestler and spending some of this time with the Harts in Calgary.

I believe the kayfabe tale is that Piper emigrated to Canada as a teenager to fight for cash and became a professional wrestler there.

I don't think they were billed as friends as much as billed as Piper spent time at Hart House.

Right, and Roddy was played up as being older than Bret, or at least representing the older WWF generation, so if they kayfabe wanted to make it work that Piper knew the Harts when Bret was a kid and Roddy was a little older, they could get away with it.

Plus, there were continuity in it as WrestleMania X when Piper teased dissension with Bret Hart in the main event.
Speaking of which, there should be surprise guest refs for WrestleMania World Title matches for every WM. (big-time stars and/OR former inactive world champions). Sorry, Mongo.
