So i was looking through my old ticket stubs to gigs I've been to over the years and a rough estimate i think Ive been to at least 80 gig's and the majority of them have been great except for a couple of gigs which have been a let down.
But the biggest band to disappoint me live was one band who had a renowned rep for being one of the best live bands on the planet, the band are considered legends and rightly so I heard stories from friends about how awesome they were live and seeing live video's of them play which were amazing. so finally in October 2004 i got the chance to see this band i was really excited as they were co-headlining with Slipknot and as much as i love the Knot I thought nah they have no chance Slipknot are going to get blown off stage.
so anyway after watching a excellent support slot from Mastodon and meh performance by Hatebreed it was time for the band i had been looking forward to the most the lights went out and they hit the stage an hour and 15Min's later it was over and i stood there in shock and my friend beside me said "well that was a bit s***". I couldn't have said it better myself and the band i just watched was Slayer.
They were awful Tom Araya was struggling to sing, the sound was horrific, Kerry and Jeff looked bored and played sloppy the full band just went through the motions and barely said 2 words to the crowd overall a very dull performance but i gave them a 2nd chance as anyone can have a off night so in 2005 i went to a festival in Germany and they were one of the weekend headliners and once again i was left disappointed for the very same reasons as i mentioned before.
It sucked cos i really was into Slayer and i still am but now when i put on one of their albums its doesn't seem to have the spark it used have with me.
so i was wondering if any crappers have had similar experience to mine if so please share.

Judas Priest
Not my favourite band but I listen to them from time-to-time but when I saw them a few years ago, man were they awful.
You could barely hear the singer, their music seemed off note and it was just a dull performance.

I've seen Slayer twice and they were shit both times. Had pretty much the same experience you had, with Araya not sounding very good and the whole band just looking like they would rather be some place else. Last time I saw them they didn't even bother to do an encore. Megadeth, who played the same night, blew them away.
Also Motörhead last year. I do think though that it had alot to do with the timeslot they were given (1:00 pm on the last day of an incredibly warm festival), but it simply was not what I had hoped for. They did their thing but the setlist was disappointing and the crowd was way too tired to really get into it anyway. Hope I get to see them again, preferably at a smaller venue, late at night and not after a week of hard drinking.

I saw Motley Crue a couple years ago at the Allstate Arena; the performance seemed flat and the band seemed like they were just going thru the motions. They're definitely past their prime (as am I) and the show seemed like nothing more than a cash grab (which it was).

I very recently saw Sublime with their new singer and it was awful. Their new singer tried really hard, but the rest of the guys in the band stood still, smoked, and just went through the motions looking angry the whole time. Its obvious that they're just going to work, making money of their dead friends songs. Also (and I'll get beat up for liking them) but Fallout Boy. I think their albums are some great poprock, but the concert was just horrendous. The bass player fell off the stage drunk. The worst was the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, cause I really liked them, and they were just SO boring.

Mastodon was holy boring. So little energy, so rote. These guys get on the stage and are totally in their own world. The stage I saw them on could have been anywhere to them. I've always wanted to like them, but their shows make it nigh-impossible.
Torche was bad, too, for very different reasons. Sound was off and it was too loud--the kind of loudness that makes everything cruddy in the awful way. They're amazing on record, though.

sterophonics suck live, kings of leon sucked live, coldplay sucked live, new smashing pumpkins line up sucked live, so solid crew sucked live.
last one is a joke, but i did see them live, and they really did suck.

Most of the current/active bands I list among my favourites I won't go to see live. The majority of televised live performances I've seen have disappointed me, and I wouldn't like to sit/stand through 2 hours of that.

I didn't think Metallica was THAT great live. Then again, I think I saw them in 2003, so I was about 15 years or so too late.

Metallica a few years ago at the united center....they were about 3 and a half hours to the stage after the opening band was done...and Hetfield just seemed bored out of his wit...and the crowd poped at first then they kept doing newer crap which caused the crowd to pretty much sit on their hands for a majority of the set and quite a few people started leaving after the 5th song.
Counting Crows at the house of blues in 04....Adam was in a really really really bad mood and kept going on about how you gotta vote....they only did 5 songs and that was it...Mr. Jones got slowed wayyyyyyyyyy the f*** down...and Ms. Potters lullaby was about 25 minutes long at that show...it was a huge disapointment espically since the last time i saw them they were friggin awesome....they did make up for it in 09 when i saw them at Grant Park.
Velvet Revolver at the house of blues....Duff looked legit pissed off at pretty much every note slash played that night...mainly because Slash kept f***ing up and was really really drunk...Scott looked really pissed off at slash too....Matt Sorum couldnt even keep time during most of the songs and at one point Duff disapeared for like 5 minutes and came back arguing with somebody backstage...Slash pretty much botched a majority of the songs that night and it was apparent that Scott and Duff were mega mega pissed off at Slash for being really drunk.
Ace Frehley at the horseshoue....ok...he was wasted....like, jeff hardy levels...just kinda staggered arround, didnt really sing much just played his songs instrumentally and at one point yells out "ive drank alot since these songs were written....you guys just sing it? ahhhhhahahahahah yeah ok?? cool!" also his Shirts he was selling were from a halloween show of his like 2 years ago.
Motley Crue at the savvis center...thank you Vince Neil for forgetting a good chunk of the words...espically how you didnt know ANY of the words to the song you wrote about your daughter...

Yeah i gotta agree with you guys on Tallica i seen them play Glasgow in the summer of 2004 and they were pretty lacklustre not the worst band ive seen live but certainly not the best i've seen either. and Yeah VR were pretty poor when I seen them play but it was on the 2008 Glasgow show where Scott Weiland basically told the crowd the band was over so tensions were very high onstage.

Mars Volta. This was years ago, so maybe they've improved since then, but they were staring off into space, ignoring the audience, and just seemed droning. I remember feeling like I would drift off to sleep.
System of a Down followed and redeemed the night for me entirely.

In general, I've lucked up on this and haven't had any horrible experiences.
The Suicide Machines on Warped Tour 2000 totally phoned it in, but there were plenty of other bands who played great, so it wasn't that big of a deal.
I was a bit disappointed when I saw the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They sounded great, but they were like living statues that night. They were co-headlining with the Foo Fighters, who sounded great and put on a hell of a show.

Most of the bands I see live are getting way up in years at this point, so it's easy to forgive them for not being a ball of fire on stage.

The White Stripes.
Saw them at a music festival about 3 years ago, and they were just so small in the middle of the stage, all the sound went up into the sky, and you couldn't even watch them on the big screens because they had a white/red effect which meant you couldn't pick out ANYTHING at all.

Fear Factory were a bit disappointing both times, but it wasn't their fault. First time supporting Ozzy and the crowd was just so utterly dead unfortunately. And second time opening a festival and the power went out on them, killing the momentum.
The Cult didn't play my two favourite songs by them which was a little disappointing, but otherwise they rocked.
