Think of Gary Neville as making up for Alan Hansen, Mark Lawrenson, Phil Thompson, Jamie Redknapp, Paul Walsh, Steve Mcmannaman, Jim Beglin , Graeme Souness etc. I don't like all of them as pundits but I don't recall any of them being as anti-Man United as Neville is anti-Liverpool. Phil Thompson is ridiculously pro-Liverpool and I'm not that big a fan of him but I don't recall him ever running half the pitch just to celebrate in front of visiting fans and causing the local Police to criticise him. The man is a dick. The vast majority of people who don't think so are Man Utd fans. Robbie Fowler celebrated a goal against Utd whilst playing for City by running up to the Utd fans and holding out 5 fingers . In fact it was the week before Neville's famous celebration against Liverpool. Nothing was said about Fowler but Neville was fined. Sky have had Fowler and Gerrard, who has admitted hating Utd, on loads of times. The fact Gary Neville wound everyone up was hilarious. I just think it's a bit rich of a Liverpool fan to moan about a potential pundit being biased when every single channel is absolutely full of ex Liverpool players. Jim Beglins commentary of the Utd Liverpool FA Cup game a few weeks ago was a disgrace. He was incredibly anti-Utd. It was like listening to fanzone commentary, he might as well have been singing You'll Never Walk Alone throughout the 90 minutes. Neville has never battered a DJ with his mates, never slept with a hooker behind his pregnant wifes back, never slept with the mother of his team mates and supposedly best friends child, never spat on anyone, never tried to organise his mates into breaking someones legs and never had to go to court after beating up a woman. Yet somehow he's probably the most hated player in the Premiership. Very odd.

Tremendous player back in the day though and very loyal and passionate. Can't really see him as a pundit however. Then again, Dean Windass is one, so anything's possible.

Neville has said his fair amount about Arsenal in the past, but I reckon he respects us. He has no respect for Liverpool or City, so it'll be fun when he does their games.

I have to admit, I never listened to the commentary for the match a couple of weeks ago. Then again, I find ITV so painful that I often mute it anyway. A lot of the pundits who are ex-Liverpool players I don't really like. Thompson is too biased, Lawrenson is too boring, Redknapp has the personality of a wet fart, Souness is a miserable sod and the less said about Stan Collymore the better.
The only ex-Liverpool pundit I like (and is IMO the best pundit in the country) is Hansen. He still loves Liverpool and doesn't hide it but is constructive. Liverpool could beat United 9-1 and on MOTD he'd criticise them for conceding a goal.
It says a lot about Gary Neville when he was never done any of the indiscretions listed above, yet he is still hated.

Lee Dixon is the best pundit on the BBC but yeah I think Hansen is alright. And to be perfectly honest Souness is fantastic on Sky. I'm not saying that every single ex Liverpool pundit is really biased just that a few are and that the sheer number of them is annoying.

Can't bear Claridge, but that's because I was friends with a couple of Pompey youth lads when I lived there and they told me what a titanic prat the man is, so I can't take him seriously when he takes people to task.
Gareth Southgate is great though.

Oh yeah Alan Hansen the man that remembers he's actually Scottish when it's convenient i.e. Scotland beating France or losing 3-2 to Spain.

Open question: Is there any football fan in England that thinks that commentary is pro-their team? Seeing Man Utd fans moaning about them has me in stitches.

Holy crap, I know Norwich like leaving it late but ... yeah, tonight was something else. Jammy mugs. I was there too, heartbreaking. We deserved to win!

On Commentary, I'm sure there have been occasions when Mark Lawrenson was biased towards Liverpool, just can't remember the last time the BBC had a live Liverpool game for a specific example. Punditry, most definitely. As I said earlier, Phil Thompson is so ridiculously pro-Liverpool. I know these pundits are picked because of their attachment to a certain team but Thompson takes it to another level.

I'm a Scotland fan and he was my favourite (non-Liverpool) Scotland player of the 80's. After he took that Brazilian free-kick in the head and basically got the s*** knocked out of him, my worship of him grew stronger.

No doubt Murdo was a good player i'm not putting that to question but you need listen to him actually commentate a game between Celtic and one the teams outside the Old Firm.

Surely Arsenal fans must think that Sky are biased towards them. Occassionally they will throw in 'Trophy Drout' but it's all waxing lyrical about their style of play.

To be fair most people I've spoken to that aren't Arsenal fans complement them on their style of play. Then take the piss out of how long its been without a trophy. And as far as I know Tylsley is a United fan, I remember an interview with Big Breakfast years ago when he said he was.

Open question: Is there any football fan in England that thinks that commentary is pro-their team? Seeing Man Utd fans moaning about them has me in stitches. It is quite funny. Sometimes when us "little teams" do well we get some patronising praise so there has been times when I thought the commentary was pro-Reading. I don't mind pundits being bias if they're open about it and there's some balance, it's when the commentary is bias I get annoyed, ITV's love of Liverpool is often ridiculous. I can't see Neville working for Sky, they like to be cheerleaders for the premier league and he'd speak his mind too much. As much as I dislike him anybody is preferable to Gary Birtles.

It used to be a running joke that in EVERY match, Tyldsley would break out the "I wonder if Sir Alex is watching..." if any player on the pitch had a deeply tenuous link to Utd.
That's now been replaced by "Remember that night in Istanbul", but yes, he does coo over Utd. But then ITV's sports coverage is an abomination all round, not just football.
