My heart breaks for the Japanese people. I have never seen such a, pardon the expression, perfect storm of catastrophe hit such a localized area in my life and, quite frankly, no one realistically can do much to stop it. Man cannot stop mother nature and mother nature has made it virtually impossible to bring these nuclear reactors under control.
I know it's against forum rules to express religion, but I'm on my knees a lot for Japan, simply because there is nowhere else to turn anymore.

For those wondering, in Canada to donate to the red cross, you text REDCROSS to 30333, instead of 90999 which is in the States. There's also an organization called Doctors without Borders. www.doctorswithoutborders.org/Any other organizations that will do help I guess should be posted here.

I'm sure it's not going to be that bad like Chernobyl. But it is a tragedy that everything is happening to them.

I'm reading more into stuff like this, and it does relate to the New Zealand Earthquake as well. Japan, thankfully, is advanced in preparing for an Earthquake, which I think why the death count is relatively low, for the most part. It's sad, but I think many countries could look at Japan and think, this is what we need to invest in, ways to prepare for Earthquakes.
The people of Japan and their tables have something in common. You can beat on them all you want, but they just don't break very easily.

Japan needs it all right now - badly. EDIT: At damaged Fukushima plant, 50 workers remain behind to pump seawater into reactors. www.nytimes.com/2011/03/15/world/asia/15nuclear.html?_r=1Gentlemen, I salute you. 50 profoundly brave individuals. This Nuclear situation really is getting scary. I hope beyond all hope that they can get things under control at the reactors. I also agree that the 50 workers still there truly are brave.

I've heard nothing since. Did they, or (hopefully) did they jump the gun on the news?

It's really impressive, if you think about it, that the nuclear plant took a 9.0 earthquake and a tsunami and is still able to be contained.
Japan as a whole is really amazing when it comes to preparing for these disasters. We could have easily been counting the dead in hundreds of thousands rather than in thousands.

2 hours old, but still of note: 6.1-magnitude quake aftershock hits eastern part of Honshu, Japan, USGS says. Shaking widely felt. news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/03/15/japan-quake-live-blog-fire-erupts-in-fourth-reactor-radiation-warning-issued/Honshu is the largest of the four main islands of Japan, for anyone not up on geography. 30-kilometer no-fly zone in place around Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuke plant - IAEA So, in essence, the ground is still moving and there is basically a sizable dome around the nuclear plant while they evaluate just how much radiation may have escaped. Will it EVER get better for these poor people? EDIT: And now, it hits us... in a way. Japanese automakers Subaru, Toyota halt some production at North American factories to assess availability of parts. www.forbes.com/feeds/ap/2011/03/15/business-us-japan-earthquake-autos_8357490.html?partner=alertsI have a nasty feeling this is only the beginning. Curious to see how Sony, Toshiba, Mitubishi and other companies will be impacted.
