Honestly this thread scares me.
I start as a waiter this weekend after working at the same place for half a year as dishwasher. I'm getting less hourly but the other waiters have told me that even on bad days they're walking out with about 100$ and up in tips.
I'm freaked out enough about screwing up and getting fired don't make me worry more that it's suddenly not gonna be worth it!!

You have been there long enough to be able to suggest what is good and what isn't based on what you have had to scrape off of dirty plates the most... If you don't like it, you can always go back. P.S. Don't actually talk about scraping food off of dirty plates, they don't want to hear it. That's gross...

Not every day you'll make it rain, but the ones where you do, it will be sweet. BUT SAVE YOUR MONEY, man. Because it's hard not to go spend that cash because it's like instant gratification.

Oh yeah, I feel you guys there too. I still tip as much as I can at restaraunts too as I know they have it just as bad, but in our area we have tons of like, exorbitantly expensive mansions in gated neighborhoods we go to. More often than not? No tip. Some will. But it's not surprising when they don't. I guess they have to pay for that Mercedes somehow :/ I'm certain I've seen studies that have shown that richer people tend to tip less. Which sucks, but is understandable in a way.

There's the old phrase "You don't become wealthy giving your money away" or whatever. We actually had one of those houses, where the guy liked to throw down the gauntlet and he'd pay with a $100. If you got there in 10 minutes or less, you got to keep it all. I got to go there once. I straight Vin Diesel'd it and got there in about three. It was a good day.

I have never seen a study like that... Most of the actual rich people I know tip very well when the service is good. The guy who has lots of money because he is cheap is a different story.

I tip depending mostly on whims. For instance, I just returned from the pub, the waitress knew my order, I didn't have to say a word. She just brought it. She got a good tip.
Others get well. Usually 20%.
Places like Pita Pit with a sign and a jar that says "What's Pita backwards? a Tip!" Hey, what's 20% of f*** you? You're not waiting on me, I'm waiting on you.

I understand the climate of the sit-down restaurant, and that waiters/waitresses typically need those tips to make up for shitty wages. That said... I think it royally sucks that I, as a customer, am expected to throw a few more bucks in the coffer to show my appreciation for somebody doing the job they were hired to do. I didn't hire that waiter, the restaurant owner did. THEY should be paying their waitstaff for doing their jobs, not me. I paid for my food, and the price of said food is already jacked way up to accommodate the service of the cooks and waitstaff. That should be all that's expected.

If the service is crap or average I don't tip. They want a tip they have to earn it by going beyond the expected service. Otherwise I am giving them extra money for just doing there job.
The Mr. Pink school of thought I agree with.

Yeah, I'm more than happy to help people out - I'm often putting myself out before I let others around me go without (though sometimes begrudgingly). But my / Mr. Pink's point remains valid.

If you feel the need to budget a pizza or a restaurant trip so tightly that you can't afford a one or two dollar tip, then perhaps it'd be the prudent thing to just save your money altogether?

Remember guys, waitresses don't make much money so if she's nice, tip MORE than the standard 15 percent if you can.

Actually, under-tipping makes me feel guilty. If I'm not in a financial bind and I'm eating out somewhere, and the food and service was good, I tip around $5 and maybe have someone I'm with pitch in also.

I was thinking of making a thread similar to this. One person who actually had the nerve to ask me for a tip was a bartender. It was $2 beer night and about 11pm needless to say I had plans to return for more so yeah she was gonna get more of my money out of me. So I had her $2 and whatever the tax was and she says where's my tip? Call me cheap or whatever but for some reason that made me go what the hell and I walked off. That's not gonna work with me. I'll tip you of course but when you semi-demand it........ that's not gonna work sister. But why dont fast food places ask for tips on thier reciepts? Surely they should be rewarded for getting your food quickly as opposed to a long wait by thier standards.
