While I am bored sitting in The Marriot, while it is storming outside, I decided to post this.
[rant]WHY? Is it designed to Rape all your money? Can I just buy anything without having to tip? WHYYYYY??? [/rant]
(Yes short and sweet, but it sucks)

Not a fan of using "rape" like that...
But yeah, it sucks. I'm a good tipper, but I hate the fact that restaurants have made it so that you HAVE to tip. It'd be great if they just paid their staff well instead.

I'd post something helpful in this thread, but then again I would be expecting a tip... and I realize I won't be receiving one. So... instead, here's a picture of a twinkie.

I have no problem tipping at all. People need money. If they do well, I leave a good tip. If they don't, I still give 'em something. But people who don't tip, to me, are just cheap.

solution: i usually eat by myself at restaurants, and usually the bill is under ten bucks, so what do i do? i drop a buck for a tip. i've just given more than 10% on the tip, easy.

I believe in over-tipping. In many cases the difference between an ok tip and a tip that would make the persons whole day is pretty small in the grand scheme of things...

I believe in over-tipping. In many cases the difference between an ok tip and a tip that would make the persons whole day is pretty small in the grand scheme of things... This guy knows what's up. Since I work a job where almost all of my income is through gratuity, I can honestly tell you, there's nothing more obnoxious than an inconsiderate cheapskate. I'm using my gas, in my personal car, to bring you shit. You'd better appreciate it and show it. Yeah, I get a paycheck. But it's NEVER enough for the work I do other than deliveries. Federal takes so much out that I never even crack $300 dollars even working long long LOOONG hours. And if anyone gives that "get a degree" line, I'm working on it. How do you think I'm payin' for school? But yeah, stuff like this just irks me and I kinda feel like I just jumped all over the OP and I really didn't mean to lash out. Nothin' personal, but yeah. You try it, man I honestly can't wait to do something else, but for the time being, it's decent steady work and I'm among people I actually like. Which is rare when I work. It can be somewhat fun.

I don't know. I'm not in the business of making other people's day. I'm in the business of making me and my girlfriend's day. If we go out for breakfast, lunch, a snack, dinner, and drinks, that's 5 places and 5 tips. If I dropped $6 per tip, that's a whole $30, which is honestly the price of an okay meal or a nice shiny blu-ray disc
If you picked the perfect wine and suggested a entree we may have not even thought of, then you'll be getting more than the average tip. If you just handed me the menu and refilled my water, be happy you're getting two dollars and hope your restaurant doesn't make you share tips.

I don't think the OP was talking about delivery. I think he was talking about sit down restaurants. You know well times are tough though. If I order a pizza at $12 a pie, plus a $2.50 delivery fee, I can barely squeeze out an extra dollar or two. It's not about being a cheapskate, it's that many of us ordering aren't made of money either.

I don't think it's fair to call people who don't tip cheap. You have to consider their possible financial situation, too. I can't afford to tip all of the people that I'm "supposed" to tip. I tip very well at restaurants. I'm not cheap. I'm just poor :/

I usually tip really well, because I know what it's like to not get tipped at all. Happens to me all the time.
I work a job that, IMO at least, deserves tips far more then a waiter or pizza delivery person (no offense intended to anyone), but rarely get anything at all. I'd say it's a little under 50/50 if we get anything or not.
Whenever I tip, I usually go above and beyond. Because I know how much it sucks to get stiffed.

Don't worry though. I have always been tipping. Pretty decent aswell. Haven't got the best service yet. Sometime gratuity can be a little high though.

Tipping IS good, OVER-Tipping is great when you can afford it/the service warrents it. When I was gettinggood steady income, I'd regularly tip $20-$30 at my favorite Italian joint (20 to the wait staff, because the owner's a cheap SOB, but damn he hires the nicest staff....$10 in the Cook's Jar because the Cooks are generally paid better than wait staff)
I've never gotten a "Bad" table, they remember me, and I'm pretty sure I got extra mussels in my Seafood plate a couple times.
It's the "Delivery Charge" stuff I start crying foul on especially on a Delivery based eatery (Jason's Deli, Dominos, etc).....I can understand some of the logic, but the argument is that It's to recoup somesuch for making the delivery.....It's ususally so small that I don't put up a fuss, but it's a principle thing to me.

Oh yeah, I feel you guys there too. I still tip as much as I can at restaraunts too as I know they have it just as bad, but in our area we have tons of like, exorbitantly expensive mansions in gated neighborhoods we go to. More often than not? No tip. Some will. But it's not surprising when they don't. I guess they have to pay for that Mercedes somehow :/ It DID suck when I was a college student on campus with like no money, but living in a house now with a job that I always have a bit of cash lying around, I'll tip like a mofo. I'm usually treated better by the middle class to low income areas because they understand what it's like, I've found. I don't take it as personally anymore as some people do if I'm not tipped, usually I can tell when it's a struggling household. I don't mean those places. Mostly because for the most part, even if it's only a little bit, a little bit is better than zilch, in my book. I mean the mansions, the expensive cars, the places that shouldn't even be buying junk food, shouldn't they have chefs? PS, I can tell you, at least at the establishment I work for which will remain unnamed...that delivery charge? I never see any of it. I don't know where it goes, but it sure as hell ain't my pocket.

I dont mind tipping at restaurants at all, If restaurants paid their staff better as where you weren't supposed to tip they would just include it on the meals price, I just assume it as part of the cost of eating there, then when someone excels as a waiter I like over tipping cause they made my time more comfortable.
That said I hate tipping at most other places, the biggest one being to bathroom attendants because they make me uncomfortable just being there and I dont f***ing understand their purpose most of the time, wow dude you passed me a towel I could as easy reach myself with the same effort it took me to grab it from your extended hand, now you want a buck? f*** it.

I used to manage a restaurant and I've seen people starting their shift when their only goal was to make at least enough to get a few groceries and some gas on their way home, and I've been the customer hoping my date wouldn't order something too expensive so I could hand over my debit card without sweating... For myself, I am happier knowing I am making someone elses day than I am buying a blu ray...

Personally I'm in the belief that you should only be tipped well if you do your job well. For example if my food takes an hour to be prepared and you bring me the wrong thing then you definitely aren't getting one from me.

Also, yeah man. If you get crappy service, I don't disagree with not tipping well or not at all. I'm never as generous with someone who treated me like a nonfactor at a restaraunt than someone who was ontop of their game. Hell, if I was to order food from where I work, and I showed up like an hour late, I would sure as hell not tip me as well unless there was a damn good excuse/I was a given a heads up as to why (because shit happens).
