In the 80s and 90s shopping malls used to be AWESOME. They had everything from music stores, video arcades, food courts, some even had movie theaters. Plus they seemed to be THE teenage hangout. Nowadays you rarely see teens hanging out at malls, music stores are all but dead (hot topic doesnt count), the video arcades are cheap looking game rooms that only have a limited number of games, and you rarely have in-mall movie theaters now. Not that malls are TRYING to do new things (i saw one mall that has an actual college inside!) but its just not the same. Heck, most people would rather buy high-end stuff (tv's, computers, furniture) at big box retailers like wal-mart than at the mall. What happened?

The big box stores killed many of them ded.
But I still go to malls. Just that only one of them in my area is actually worth going to. It's remodeled and is actually putting more upscale selections in it.

Speaking of malls, do any malls still have in-mall pet stores? While i liked them, it was kind of sad as it basically served as "ogle theater". Most of the time the people in there were all "look at the cute puppies!" then walk away, leaving said puppy lonely. It was rare whenever i saw someone actually TAKE HOME a pet from there.

None in the Phx area anymore, I do believe. Ever since people became more conscious about social issues, pet stores (especially in shopping malls) have mostly died off.

Saying teenagers dont hang out there anymore is a bit of an exaggeration. They are still there in decent sized numbers. I always try to go to the malls at times when they wont be a lot of them there. Late weeknights or early weekday mornings are good.

Malls based in the greater St. Louis area have sadly been dropping like flies. Northwest Plaza and St. Louis Centre used to have great store selections and food courts befoe they closed, and Crestwood Plaza is just depressing now.
The Galleria is still fairly busy, as is St. Louis Mills which was the mall that helped kill off Northwest- along with the long recession of the last decade.

The Mall of Georgia is still packed full of teens hanging out on weekends and weeknights and stuff. That place is always pretty damn crowded, actually. I dunno if that's an exception to the rule, but yeah. i thought malls were still pretty big.

Music wise all we have is FYE,and they're decent.
Here in North Carolina our malls have a good amount of teens, mostly in the "trendy" shopping stores.

It's the natural evolution of free market commerce. Originally, it was "Main Street America", which gave way to the malls, which is giving way to brick and mortar stores, and now we're in the digital sales market, Wal-Mart (which I give all the credit in the world to), and online sales (Amazon, et al).

A great site, if you haven't seen it already, is deadmalls.com. They're supposed to be a part of a documentary called Malls R Us, but I haven't found a release date on it. Netflix has it listed for reserves, though.

From what I see teens still hang out at malls. Also I question the logic that mall used to be awesome. I'm pretty sure malls always sucked, we were just too young to notice it.

Hollister is big in my town so people will go to the mall just for that store.

Hanes Mall, the one near me is pretty big. Still has an FYE, although I remember when it had like three record stores and a Suncoast. That was awesome.

Teens totally still hang out at malls. When I was working at my last job (in a mall, next to a pet shop, to answer another poster's question), all I had were kids ditching school on the weekdays, and wall-to-wall faux goth kids all weekend.
