Arguably the greatest game series of all time (I actually haven't even played 4 yet cause I never got a PS3, yet), the Metal Gear Solid series has boasted some truly memorable and innovative boss fights. What are your favourites, and why?
Yeah I know most will say it, but Psycho Mantis immediately springs to mind. I'll never forget the experience I had first playing that as a kid. Just blew my mind.
Apart from Mantis, I loved Vulcan Raven's boss fight too (the one in the warehouse, not the one where he's in a tank). He was just so menacing, and BIG and my god, THAT GUN. I was s***ting myself when I faced off with him, and the sense of triumph I had after defeating him was amazing.
I'm also going to mention The End from Snake Eater. What an EPIC boss battle, just you and the old man in a game of cat and mouse spread over three huge areas. It was so.......god it was so awesome. I really loved that one. Stalking him, trying to find the glint of sunlight off his scope, the taunts he would make just before shooting you......just an epic, epic boss battle.
Feel free to add in boss battles from Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 as well.
What are some of you guys' favourites, and why?

Sniper Wolf in my opinion is one the best boss battle. Funny because this was the first one to come to mind. I enjoyed Psycho Mantis but I had more fun with Sniper Wolf.

From MGS1, I say Psycho Mantis is the best battle. For MGS2, I enjoy the battle against the Metal Gear Rays, and in fact that is my favourite boss fight of them all. MGS3 has to be The End. So epic.
**MGS4 SPOILERS**
Put the spoiler tags there for the OP as I saw he hasn't played 4 yet. Best boss from that game is either the fight with Ray when you take control of REX, or the final fight with Ocelot, which has to be one of the most emotional boss fights in gaming.

I had to sell "Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes" (the GameCube port of the first MGS game) before I got too far, but I have the guide still.
As good as I've heard the MGS fight with Psycho Mantis is, the Cube version does an added twist.
If you have any of the following titles in your memory cards apparently, he will mention them: -Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requim -The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker -Super Mario Sunshine -Super Smash Bros. Melee
...just thought I'd mention that. Carry on.

I forget the name, but the boss that would hack your television and make you switch to the second controller.

MGS1 I really enjoyed all the boss battles in MGS1. My favorite two, and the others aren't far behind, are the 2nd battle with Vulcan Raven and the Psycho Mantis battle. For Mantis, it was way ahead of its time. Reading the memory card, making the controller move, forcing you to readjust your controller port? Incredibly creative stuff to add immersion into his psychological trickery. I really liked the idea of Vulcan Raven chasing your around the boxes, too. Sneaking up on him using nikita missiles was a lot of fun. Plus, his end speech...really good stuff that helped characterize Snake (just like the Mantis battle, where he brought out Snake's darkness).
MGS2 I didn't really care for most of the bosses in MGS2, but I loved the storyline and philosophical stuff to death. This game had me asking a lot of questions that came up in real life, and I always loved that about it. Anyway, my favorite fight is probably the last one against Solidus. It was a nice change of pace.
MGS3 Undoubtedly, the boss battle against The End. I think on my first play-thru I spent an hour trying to defeat him. The field of flowers fight against The Boss was also very memorable. They did a good job making the boss battles a lot of fun in MGS3.
MGS4 I really need to play this one again. Being able to control Metal Gear Rex was a pipedream come true. I loved the Rex-Ray battle. The one against Octopus was pretty cool, too.
I'd say overall, probably The End, with a few MGS1 ones behind.

I liked The End from MGS3. So many different outcomes, different feel to every other boss fight ever. With every other boss fight once the cutscene ended the music would blare out and then you would just blast them away for 2 minutes and that would be it. But with The End there is no music and instead of running around shooting at everything that moves, you used stealth and cunning to kill him. And fighting The End for upwards of an hour was much more satisfying.
Special mentions go to Psycho Mantis (definately the most clever use of a Boss fight) and The Boss from MGS3 (just a beautiful piece of video game).

I'd check this thread in a week, but then the boss would die.

I liked the cheat you could do w/ The End. save during the fight, set your game calender ahead a week or so, come back on, and he dies of natural causes.

I think watching G4's "Cheat" when it was a regular show had another way to cheat at beating him: Snipe him before you ever meet him face to face. Don't remember exactly how but I think that was a possibility.

If you are fast enough you can nail him w/your sniper rifle and take him out there.

I have an odd question. I picked up MGS3 like three months ago specifically so I could fight The End. I barely got into it though before I set it aside and forgot about it. I haven't even run into the guy yet, but does this mean The End is dead? Or can I still fight him?

I'm just gonna go ahead and say all of them.
.....except The Fear. F*** that guy. No boss as quick as he is should be able to heal.

I haven't even run into the guy yet, but does this mean The End is dead? Or can I still fight him? You can still fight him. You need to start the battle with him and then pass at least a week in the PS2's clock for him to die of old age. And my favourite is the REX/RAY fight. Just. F'n. Awesome.
