So a few days ago I spilled water on my laptop and it hasn't worked since. I've only had it for a few months too. Does anyone know if it can be fixed? I was hoping I could get the water to come/dry out but so far nothing.
It turns on fine but the keyboard and mouse pad are all screwy. :/ Anyone know how much it would cost to fix?

Depends where you take it to get it fixed, although it might be a bit costly no matter where judging from the situation. I'd definitely try to get it fixed before completely giving up on it, especially since it's practically new.

I dunno. Maybe you should ask Cathy.

I have a friend that spilled coffee on hers. She took it to a computer place and they wanted $150 to clean it using soap and water. She says she talked them down to 75 somehow, but it does work now.

if it's only a few months old, what happened to the warranty? Did you get one with it?
If so, I'd make sure this isn't someting that'd be covered by it.

It should have a manufacture's warranty or something at least but I figured those don't cover water damage.

you could always get a USB keyboard/mouse kind of a roundabout solution.
then again i guess it kinda defeats the purpose of a laptop (new one at that).

See how much it would cost to fix. It may be almost as much as getting a new one.

Do you or your family have home owners insurance? A friend spilled water on his laptop and his insurance took care of it right away
Also if you paid with a credit card many credit cards will give you insurance on a purchase for up to a year. If you just got it it's worth checking

Putting it in rice for a day or two may work, or maybe not (especially as it’s been a while) I’m just going by what TV tells me to do.

You may just have to replace the keyboard...I spilled a drink on mine and had the same result, took awhile, but found the part i needed and had my brother install it.

If you know anything about taking apart laptops, it's not too hard. It's likely not dry completely and you only turning it on will just fry the motherboard. That's what I'd do. I wouldn't dry it with anything, just take it apart and let it dry for a couple days. You could probably google your model and find a guide to take it apart.

Yeah I think it may be lost. I didn't realize how much water got in it and I ran it for a while before it messed up. I remember it made a weird noise for a second and then I ran a backup restore. I tried the keys after and they didn't work or it simply auto pressed some button. After that I just left it off for a few days and haven't turned it on since. I don't know how to take it apart but will it dry if I leave it for a week or so? Or is there not enough space for air to get in? I'd guess it was about a 1/4 or quarter cup that was split on it. I don't mind hooking up a mouse and keyboard until I get around to buying a new one. I just want to make sure I wait long enough for it to dry, assuming there was no permanent damage.

I'd say just buy a cheap mouse/keyboard combo, likely one for $20. But if anything, without taking it apart, put a fan on it and leave it on constantly. NOT A HEATER. If you're lucky, the most you did is fry the keyboard and mousepad. But you did say they worked. They likely just need to dry. But it's best it was just water and not soda etc. But since you did run it (NEVER do that on electronics until you know it's 100% dry), it may have fried the motherboard. But only time will tell.
