Yesterday, the Taliban released video of a 26-year-old Toronto man, Colin Rutherford, that they had captured as a prisoner in Afghanistan. He isn't a soldier. From the National Post's story: In the video, Mr. Rutherford answers a number of questions posed to him by a man sitting or standing out of view. Mr. Rutherford is asked his name and his nationality. He is asked why he came to Afghanistan in October. Mr. Rutherford says he came as a tourist interested "in history and historic sites, old buildings, shrines.. I am an auditor from Canada and I came as a tourist," he repeats.
I hope that Rutherford gets home safe and sound, but what a stupid, selfish and reckless behaviour put on display by this guy. Who goes on vacation in a war zone? Obviously, Rutherford didn't want to be captured, but he did himself no favours in putting himself in a lawless land. Because of this, his family is undoubtedly going crazy with worry and now he's put his government of the unenviable position of having to tactfully arrange for his release with a group of people who've proven time and time again to be disinterested in diplomacy. People need to be more accountable for the decisions they make.

Hopefully he'll come back in one piece, and I mean that quite literally.

Not a smart move by Rutherford, there.

People need to be more accountable for the decisions they make. What's more accountable than being held captive by terrorists? I mean, what would you do? Fine him? Anyway, Afghanistan isn't supposed to be lawless. Some places are safer than others and that can change. That might be unstable enough to keep a lot of people away but even then, Mr. Rutherford had a one in a million shot at being abducted.

Yeah, it's not illegal to be a tourist, it's not his fault he got abducted. Yeah, people should be accountable, the people who kidnap others should be accountable for doing the kidnapping.
I'd like to go to Afghanistan but I know it's a bad idea because of the barbarians that are there, but people could still have a desire to see different places.

A little common sense goes a long way here.
