So I went out and bought a new gaming laptop, and the thing is a beast. Went on srtest.com and saw that it can run just about any game I could think of.
Only problem is, I'm primarily a console gamer and don't know many of the high profile PC games, which is why I turn to the wise people of this board. Any suggestions?

What do you like to do?
The PC is it's own console.
If you're not looking for something just to push the limits of your processing power, you have a head swimming amount of options.
Hell, with modding, you have options within those options. That's the true freedom of computer gaming.

Not exactly high-profile, more a cult classic, but I highly recommend Thief: The Dark Project.

Every. Single. Damn. Game. Made. By. Valve.
But more specifically:
- Half-Life - Half-Life 2 - Team Fortress 2 - Portal - Portal 2 - Left 4 Dead - Left 4 Dead 2
Also, you need to look at Blizzard's offerings:
- Warcraft - Warcraft II - Warcraft III - StarCraft - StarCraft II - Diablo - Diablo II
The Civilization series of strategy games are must have games. Civ 4 and Civ 5 are probably the best two games in the series.
Oh, and whatever you do, you NEEEEEEEEEEEED to download Steam. It is Valve's digital game service for PCs(and Macs) that lets you buy games and helps you play the online modes on games with online. It is 100% free to download and to create an account. There are nearly always sales on Steam, and the best time to buy games off of Steam is their holiday sales, especially their Black Friday sales and the menagerie of sales they have in December.
Here are some of the insane deals I've been able to get from Steam. I got both Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 for just $12 combined. I also got Psychonauts for just $2. $2!
So yeah. That's what I suggest.

Look into the Command and Conquer series, namely Red Alert 2 and Yuri's Revenge. They're my favorites. They're not the most technologically-advanced games ever but they're still damn fun.

First of all, get steam, they have a huge library of games and have great sales(especially during the holidays)

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. I created a Steam account, and I have a few games coming through Amazon. The PC game selection in my area is really limited.

In terms of strategy games I recommend civ V and civ III
Civ IV, to me atleast, was firaxis digging themselves a niche and making the game enjoyable for people who really liked the civ series but also making it hard for people just getting in. Civ IV also has a bunch of random BS (barbarian spawns, random events, etc.) that just make it feel like more of a game of luck than an actual strategy game.
Now if you really want to go down the crazy strategy game rabbit hole you can also get rome total war on steam (the cheap total war game for those just starting out on that series) and if you REALLY want to go crazy gog.com has master of orion 1 and 2 bundled together for 6 bucks.
DON'T GET MOO3, just don't.
Fallout 1 and 2 are also good, but they have their annoyances (fallout 1's timer and fallout 2's tutorial being the most glaring).
Torchlight if you want a diablo clone that's actually better than diablo.
The King's Bounty series is interesting if you want to play a might and magic clone.
As far as adventure games go, anything by tell tale (except hector badge of carnage, which wasn't even developed by t.t.) is a good start.
I'll think of more eventually, but you should have hours upon hours of gaming just from these suggestions alone.

Check out GOG.com. They have a lot of old, classic PC games updated to run on modern OS'es. DRM-free, too. It's a great complement to Steam.

You also don't have to download a shitload of patches and stuff if you were late getting the game unlike with Steam which forces you to download stuff. Hell, I gave up on Empire Total War when it said I needed to download 8 gigs of crap before being able to play it.

Patches are a necessary evil because they fix the problems with a game.....

If they at least let me play without having to download them then I wouldn't have a problem. Plus, not all patches are as good as what Valve put out as it's actually becoming rather common that they cause more problems. Hell, the only game that I actively sought patches for was Sims 3 because that actually made the game run very well for me before my External HD bricked.

DEUS EX. A THOUSAND TIMES DEUS EX. A hundred times Deus Ex 2 (great game, but not as mindblowing as the first one)
Every Bethesda and Bioware game (for the most part): Morrowind, Oblivion, Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, KOTOR, KOTOR2, Jade Empire, Mass Effect 1+2
Omikron: The Nomad Soul
SCUMM VM point and click games, including the notably freeware Beneath a Steel Sky. All the classic lucasarts offerings are great (Sam and Max Hit the Road, Monkey Island, etc)
The Discworld point and click games are fun
People seem to dig Minecraft for some reason beyond my comprehension.
Yeah....I don't really know new games for the most part. I'm a console gamer.

Omikron? Is that the game with David Bowie? If so, I've been trying to remember the name of that game for years, since my Dreamcast died a few years back. Although I set up an account for Steam, I'm not sure if I really like it. The interface is going to take some time to get used to. Hell, the whole PC gaming thing is take some time to get used to. And I guess as a point of reference, the last game I played and truly enjoyed on the computer was Rise Of Nations. I sank I don't even know how many hours into that game, and even though I sucked at the tactical side of it, it was still great fun. I'd like to thank everyone again for all the suggestions. You guys rock.

I have a bunch of games for the 360 and PS3, but I drew a blank when it came to PC games. And Minecraft was actually my first purchase once I got everything up and running. I absolutely love that game, even though I'm not fully sure why.

Yeah, that is Omikron. I had it for the DC originally as well (mine bit the dust a long time ago though)
