I was at the Smackdown taping this week and while Cena wasn't there, every time he came on the Tron -- Tribute to the Troops vignette, a couple of other times -- the crowd went nuts.
A lot of people -- and yes, a lot of them were kids -- even stood and cheered every time.
Were there any boos? Perhaps, but where I was sitting you couldn't hear the because the pop was so loud it drowned them out. The pop for Cena on the big screen was greater than the pop for a lot of live performers who were actually there.
I don't get why a lot of IWCers make a big deal out of the fact that Cena gets some boos -- it's not like half the crowd boos him, even in the places where he gets the most negative reaction. You'd have a lot of trouble convincing me it ever rises to even 10 percent.
And if you notice (on TV, PPVs, live, whatever), the initial reaction when he comes out is a massive cheer -- then when it dies down you hear a few boos. It's almost like some people go, 'Oh, wait, I'm supposed to boo him because I'm a smark!!!"
Contrast this with the fact that pretty much no one ever brings up the opposite -- that some of the major heels get a lot more pop than Cena ever gets heat. Edge, Randy Orton, Triple H and others, in their heel incarnations, have always, for as long as I can remember, had vocal fans. If some smarks booing Cena is supposed to be some kind of indictment of him as a face, isn't a heel getting massive cheers a sign that they aren't getting their characters across in a way that draws a proper response? Why isn't a big deal made about that?
I think most of the people who boo Cena do so because they think it's cool to boo Cena, not because they actually don't like him or like his character.
What's your take?

It's died down over the years. When I went to SummerSlam 2006, the boos outweighed the cheers...in BOSTON no less.

He doesn't get booed a lot anymore. It mostly happened between 05-08 it seems like.

Yeah its not even close now. Go back and watch New Year's Revolution '06. He gets the heel treatment, while Angle cuts a famous promo saying he'd make Jesus tap, and gets cheered. Hell, Edge, one of the most over heels at the time, got a huge pop for cashing MITB and beating Cena.

When we went to the Draft in 2009, Cena had a match against Swagger and the crowd started a "Let's go Cena" chant so me and my friend countered with "Let's go Swagger" I believe it was and we just booed the hell out of Cena. It was pretty funny and we actually got a bunch of other people join in. What made it better was that there were another four people in our little group that actually liked Cena so we were basically yelling at each other, lol. I'm not sure if you can hear the cheers on TV or not though.
I've only been to two live events and the other was Smackdown! and I obviously didn't see Cena there so the Draft was the only experience I'd had with a "Cena crowd." lol
Every now and then, if I'm not mistaken, you can still hear boos. Cena's addressed it a few times too, hasn't he? I know he did in his farewell speech at least. I think the hate for him has died out a lot compared to how heavy it was in 05/06... which I personally don't get because I still think he's pretty bland, but hey... whatevs.

Dont think WWE ever cared. People showed interest in him and thats all that mattered. Don't care what anyone says... having him main event One Night Stand 2006 was genious.

It because most of the people that were booing him stopped watching when it became apparent they weren't going to stop pushing him/turn him heel. It's where that 2 point rating went.

It might be back eventually. The Cena/Nexus storyline kind of killed a lot of the boos. I slowly seem them coming back, but they're not back in full force yet. (Then again, most of the boos he got when I was at "Survivor Series" were from the geniuses that kept booing the faces and cheering the heels anyways.)

That was one of Cena's greatest moments. He really exuded that "me against the world" mentality, and that made everything feel that much more legit. I'd like to see more of that Cena.

he got some great boos when he came back from being "fired" and encouraged all the men to boo him, though I suppose a lot of that was collaborative and cooperative and tongue-in-cheek

I was one of the first Cena 'haters' I believe, April 2005 at a Smackdown house show in London me and my friend were the only people booing him but that was because we LOVED JBL and were gutted that Cena had ended his title reign. It was One Night Stand 2006 that started to turned me back round though, how could you not respect him after having to endure that? I think it was throughout 2007 when he was having pretty good matches with Umaga and in particular The Great Khali which made me realise that he wasn't as bad in the ring as i'd previously thought and now i'm a pretty big fan of his though some of the booking does make me shake my head sometimes. Though I was booing Cena very loudly in November at the Manchester RAW taping, but that was just because Manchester was very much Nexus and welcoming home their hero Wade Barrett who he was feuding with. I hope that stupid twat is at Wrestlemania again in the We Hate Cena shirt so Cena can embarrass him again.

I think this is the reason for the inane "CM Sucks" name. That way when some crowds occasionally chant "Cena Sucks", corporate toolbags like Cole can claim it's the former. [/Conspiracy hat].

It because most of the people that were booing him stopped watching when it became apparent they weren't going to stop pushing him/turn him heel. It's where that 2 point rating went. But...but...people just have more ways to watch! Have more channels! Whatever! (Oh wait, the shows sucked for a long time and are now mostly predictable and lacking in anything too exciting or worthy of watching every week?)
