Um what happened?
I mean I hate to jump the gun but just like the beginning of 2009, it seems they are kinda dropping the ball a bit here. He is in the title hunt and having main event matches on Raw but it still feels like he's just floundering.
He's kinda just...there. At least to me.
I know that seems impossible, with all of the main events he gets and the crowd reactions, but I think the hype from a few months ago has calmed considerably.
We saw the video of him leading the WWE guys out against Nexus after Raw went on the air months ago and at that moment probably said, "yup...he's the man now".
Now he just feels like he's in the middle of stuff with no real direction.
I dunno, just seems that way to me.
I'm no Orton fan so it doesn't really matter to me either way, but it just seems like he is...never doing anything but cutting his usual 'Orton looking off into the wilderness, only to be interrupted by Josh or replacement Josh' promo every week. He has a main event and wins.
Um ok.

The guy is just not meant to be a babyface. Honestly, he's still isn't at this point. If anything he's a tweener.

He's the new Undertaker. He's the guy that is super over and can main event any show...but he's not going to be the face of the company. I really feel like he'll be that cornerstone for WWE like Taker has been forever.

What happened was they put the belt on him and ratings tanked below a 3, and while that wasn't Orton's fault, it didn't exactly suggest that he was going to be the Austin-like megastar that WWE was hoping for.
He's still getting heavily pushed as the #2 babyface of the company, right behind Cena; if Orton feels like he's floundering in that role, it has less to do with the bookers not being behind him (because they're certainly pushing him to the moon) than it does with the fact that Orton simply isn't terribly good.

He never loses and he's always in the main event.
How is that floundering? And how is he not that good, guy that posted above me?

And how is he not that good, guy that posted above me? His matches tend to be mediocre at best when he isn't working with an extremely talented opponent, and his promos consist of monotone droning interspersed with awkward pauses. But hey, YMMV.

I'm scratching my head at Orton saying he was too nice last year. If anything, the flaw of his character is that he's isn't human enough. They're trying to hard to ape the success they had with Austin. The difference is that while Austin was ruthless at times, he was never a total robot.

I disagree! I don't think his matches are mediocre, but then I don't know what much more there is to expect. His promo's aren't exactly droning that's just how his character is and imo they are a lot more entertaining than they used to be! I'm scratching my head at Orton saying he was too nice last year. If anything, the flaw of his character is that he's isn't human enough. They're trying to hard to ape the success they had with Austin. The difference is that while Austin was ruthless at times, he was never a total robot. Uh, what? I don't see any similarities between the two except that they are both anti-heroes. And Austin was far more ruthless, you would have never seen the Austin that you are apparently saying that they are trying to rip off with Orton hug somebody like John Cena! Or anybody really!

He honestly doesn't have the Charisma to be the face of the company in my opinion.

I never stated that he wasn't, but it takes more then being really over to be THE face of the company, and I don't think Orton has what it takes.

If not for Cena I think he would be! But he'd have to be a little less brutal too.

Orton is super over now? I missed two weeks and it finally happened? Because before that I saw the same charisma free robot he's always been.

He is pretty much the same bland guy he's always been but the crowd go nuts for him. Mainly because he's booked as a badass.

I'm the biggest Randy Fan I know (Since he shaved the head and got the sleeves anyway..)
But they really, genuinely screwed the pooch on Orton way, way, way long ago..in terms of being "The Guy".
And that was after he punted Vince McMahon. That was their shot. Right there. They had something. But instead..they wanted him to be a heel. So they did the I.E.D business..made his character suddenly cowardly, when up to that point he was a loose wire and had been at his best ever...But No. Trips had to be the Face...
But yeah. Like someone said. He's the next "Taker". He has to be second to Cena unless Cena someday turns.
(also a change of pace would help...ala Smackdown!)

Maybe my hearing is going on me but I've yet to hear a crowd go nuts for him. Cody got louder pops when they thought he was going to turn on Randy. Do they pop? Yes. Go nuts? Haven't seen it.

Orton needs to go back to being a heel, the heels are really lacking at the moment in the main event division. They've only got up & comers... and Kane.
Face Undertaker Edge Cena Mysterio Orton Triple H Big Show
Heel Sheamus Del Rio Kane Miz

I think he needs to be a really loose cannon heel, he needs to punt John Cena. Hard.

I don't see exactly how he is floundering? He is always one of the focal parts of the show, he's got a title match at the Royal Rumble, and he is MASSIVELY over with the crowd.
I don't see the floundering part.
