When it comes time for someone to win a title belt how far ahead in advance does the person winning the belt get notified of this?
Who tells them there is gonna be a title change? Is it the road agent(s)? Does Vince do it himself?

I think Shelton Benjamin found out about his 1st IC Title win, when the match started. I know Jericho found out he was losing, after the match began.

I think it depends on the occasion, really. Some are planned out far in advance and some are "okay, you're gonna go lose the belt in five minutes. Sorry! "

I would guess that talent are not told about title changes too far in advance anymore so they can't go get drunk in a bar and leak the result (Luger, I'm looking at you). As far as who tells them, probably the same person who usually tells them the outcomes of their matches, but personally I like to think that when a guy is going to get his first title Vince makes an effort to deliver the news personally.

I remember Edge telling a story in his book about how he didn't know he was getting his first IC championship until he had won it. Seriously, the road agent told him "go get your belt, champ" in the middle of the ring after the match.

I think the Luger thing got debunked, but yeah, I guess it's a concern. Realistically, I think the bigger issue is more due to possible injuries, gate reports or PPV sales, ratings, etc making them need to be very flexible in their booking. They have a lot of hours of programming to book and manage, so they play it by ear on the minor titles, but I imagine winning the world title is a lot less of a shock, outside of the surreal fact you just won the big one.

My question is: if a guy is being booked with a losing streak angle, does he know the plan or does he just go to the shows every week thinking that he's getting buried for some reason?

It wasn't a title match to begin with. Jack Lanza called an audible and decided since Edge and Jarrett were competing for the belt the next night at Fully Loaded 99 that there would be no problem switching that title that night. I couldn't even imagine the outrage that would occur if a similar thing happened now.

I remember reading it said once by Punk that he learned he was cashing in (the first time) just a few hours before it happened.

I think they'll leave it a couple hours before the match especially this day and age where everything can be leaked so easily WWE want to hold of telling the guys/girls that they are winning the belt to try and avoid it being leaked to every Dirt sheet going.

When I met Marty Janetty in a Brooklyn bar following an early '90s house show at MSG, we hung out for an hour but he didn't have a clue that he would be WWF tag team champion with 1-2-3 Kid inside of two weeks time.

I think it depends on who it is and the situation. For instance, I'm sure every WrestleMania title change was known in advance by those involved.
But I'm sure for the most part, they try to keep things under wraps, both to avoid leaks, and also to avoid having situations like in WCW, where someone gets hurt or fired right before they're scheduled to win the belt.

Surely you'd think that a road agent would mention the angle to the individual so they don't think they are hated and in the dog house/chopping block? I mean....a losing streak angle is certainly thought out well in advance to happen.

This ties into a question I've always wanted to ask...
If everyone knows the result of the match going in, are title winning celebrations entirely fake?
No matter how hard you work, I can't see you having a genuine level of emotion to something you knew about days ago. When wrestlers say 'Winning my first World Title was the highlight of my career', do they really mean 'When I was told I was booked to win my first World Title?'.
Or any post-match emotion for that matter. When Roxxi was fired from TNA when she arrived her match, people were saying that her crying afterwards was genuine. How could it be?

Knowing you're leaving a company/industry that you (assuming) love, I'm sure the reaction is legit. Same thing for winning a world title. Now, I'm sure not all guys really give a shit, but when Miz won the belt, it sure seemed sincere. The guy was a fan his whole life, worked hard to get to the top, and when he did, he was thrilled he did it.

Flair & Foley both cried after their "retirement matches" even though both would later wrestle again. At the time, it did seem like the end of their careers for them. It's a sport that they love and have devoted their lives to.....just because you know the outcome going in doesn't make it any less real when it actually happens. Roxxi knew she was on her way out after the match but she had been with TNA for a while and was sad to be forced out that way.
