He seems to sound more annoyed on commentary, especially on NXT. Pretty much ripping the show apart (like Cole did on NXT3) and is even picking on poor Todd Grisham for no apparent reason.
He even started clapping and cheering arrogantly when Cole made an apperance on NXT this past week.
What's his deal? This attitude change seems so forced and sudden.

He's annoyed because he has to do NXT with Grisham

He seemingly is thinking that because Cole being a dick has gotten him so much heat, then he would be the Smackdown version of that.

I'm sure he was told to act that way.

Almost certain he is being told to be that way by the people who think Michael Cole should be on every show.

Josh Matthews strikes me as "the voice of reason" on NXT: not as loud and irritating as Cole but not as much of an optimist as Grisham.

I haven't watched much NXT, but one Grisham kind sucks. Two Cole is gone, they need someone to be obnoxious bitter announcer who believes NXT is beneath him. Finally, Matthews has been there since season 1 and last season really wasn't that happy to be there either, he was just more professional than Cole about it.

He seemingly is thinking that because Cole being a dick has gotten him so much heat, then he would be the Smackdown version of that. But Cole is on Smackdown too right?Or did they stop that? From what I gathered from watching SD! last night, SD!Cole is a toned down version of the way he acts on Raw. Instead of being a Heel-Commentator, he simply acts harshly towards the rookies who haven't payed their dues yet in the WWE. It actually works pretty well since Striker and Matthews are good at defending them.

You know, Michael Cole has made me liked Josh Matthews through NXT. I always thought of Josh Matthews as being something of a stooge and when Michael Cole unleashed his true power, that brought out the dynamic personality in Josh. Now instead of having bland commentators, we have commentators with personalities who are constantly making the show interesting based off of what their saying.
I like that Matthews is sharper, like Cole is. It just makes everything so much more interesting. I can't wait for them to call Wrestlemania.

I don't watch NXT but Josh has always had smarkish leanings so ripping into things he doesn't like does fit his character.

He kinda is, which is weird. I liked how he played off Cole. They always sounded like really good buddies who disagreed on everything.

f*** it, it got Cole over to the point where an announcer's being pushed better than 85% of the actual talent, so why wouldn't it work for Matthews, a guy that actually has....talent?

He is doing it a bit different than Cole. He still sounds like he wants these guys to succeed but is fully aware NXT is built to pretty much do the opposite.
Like during that god awful talent show he was complaining about how this wasn't going to help any of them be a breakout star and they all look like morons for using this opportunity to connect with the audience to instead read a poem or stand on a chair. Coming off like he was almost yelling at the idiots who book this as much as the wrestlers.
Cole just wanted everyone to know how awful everything is and didn't sound like he gave a s*** about any of the wrestlers, especially during season 3.

I don't like the way on Superstars he is being a Dick to Scott Stanford for no reason.
Like how Scott brought up a nice bit of history about Regal wrestling DH Smith's father at halloween Havok 93, which Josh for some reason mocked Scott for bringing it and belittled the point.
