Snowman hinted at the baffling nature of the segment. I've been watching these bizarre Pope skits on TNA for the past few weeks and I have no idea where any of this is headed. First, he cuts a strange promo from inside a casket while a choir runs around ringside singing and dancing. Uh....okay. Then he takes money from some guy and goes to a strip club. Now he goes to a kennel and requests pit bulls for a group of inner city kids?
Make no mistake, the whole Vick inference is what they were going for with that segment. There is no other logical reason to mention pit bulls other than to imply Pope was in need of pit bulls to start a dog fighting ring.
The bigger question is this: Why is TNA doing this angle? How is the wrestling fan supposed to react? Should we boo or cheer this man? There is zero frame of reference to the entire storyline and the announcers do not discuss these skits after they air.

For whatever reason - in the US, when people hear "pit bull" they are, unfortunately, associated with one of two things. Pit bull dog fighting and this man: Sad considering pitbulls are not naturally that way (prone to fighting). If Pitbull fought Daddy Yankee in a cage I'd watch for sure.

If they're going in the direction people seem to think they're going, TNA CLEARLY has no qualms about it. They're clearly looking for a publicity grab, be it good or bad.

Totally agree with you, thats just plain tasteless. Tasteless...I dunno really. Incredibly stupid and pointless...definitely. Kinda my take. Waste of a few minutes that coulda been given to a match, an interview, something else. Yeah it wasn't anything long, but a waste of time is a waste of time.

This the whole angle is beyond baffling and idiotic even by TNA booking standars, which is saying something.

It feels like they're getting back to what Pope was when he first got to TNA as a heel, but putting the extra spin that Pope's running a scam in the name of charity. I don't like how they're doing either, I liked Pope's character as somewhat of a tweener.

It was just a throw away joke. They just wanted Pope to be a black stereotype.

totally dumb & useless...whenever he'll get back into the ring instead of having vignettes every week, all his heat will be dead & gone

It was just a throw away joke. They just wanted Pope to be a black stereotype. That's perhaps one of the worst parts of it, though. It was pointless, just being offensive to be offensive. TNA is rather lucky they didn't lose a sponsor over it. And what for? There's really no payoff to justify the risk.

I doubt it's going to be his actual gimmick. Just with that, and him taking all the money to a strip club a few weeks ago, and all that, they are just trying to show that his "congregation" is a scam. And apparently with the way the announcers talk after all these videos, someone is following him and filming his activities. Meaning it will probably get "GTV'd" and dragged on forever and then never revealed who it is. the first part of this is correct. it's an ongoing "plot" line with the Pope using the congregations money for (what we perceive to be) malicious means.

I haven't really gone through this thread too deeply, so I'm not sure what's been said so far, but this has been bugging me so I have to ask. Am I the only person who think it's incredibly stupid to turn a man who was probably the number 2 face in the company just 2 months ago and who's run in that role had barely been touched, and turn him heel in such a quick, haphazard, and stupid manner?

This is probably the most racist gimmick in the last 5 years.

This is probably the most racist gimmick in the last 5 years. Aside from this single segment (which does not a gimmick make) not even having a shred of racism connected to it, Cryme Time comes a whole lot quicker to mind as "the most racist gimmick in the last 5 years".

Here is why I thought this made me the most pissed off to be a fan of pro wrestling..............since "He who will not be named"'s act
* Why was Pope chosen for this segment? Because he was black & Michael Vick was black. From the documentaries I have seen of dog fighting, most of the guys that are seen are mostly either white or latino. Just because the most currently known offender was black doesn't make it a precident that they like dog fighting.
* Most of the action is in the Southern States because that is closer to Mexico and Latin America, where dog fighting is legal (along with other things). The Pope is from Harlem....which last I checked is in New York and last I also checked, New York is pretty much a Northern State.
* I live in Virginia where this whole Michael Vick crap was played ad nauseam in both the National News and the Local News. Why, because Michael Vick lived in Virginia and that was where a lot of this nonsense was going down.
* It has seemed (not presuming anything) that Michael Vick has reformed from his disgusting behavior involving dog fighting and now because this man was given praise by the President (credit that was probably not the wisest move Obama made) and is back to leading an NFL team to the playoffs, TNA decides to do this now.
* Let's be honest...........TNA didn't do this for a sensical reason, they did this to just create controversy because as we all know, both Russo and Bischoff are in the realm that any contraversy is good for the business. Controversy normally works in wrestling if their is context to it or there is a reason (other that "because it will be contreversial) for it.
* Another example of a guy who is over in TNA being turned because he doesn't fit their mold of a guy who is over.

I like how the announcers somehow know that Pope is being "followed" by "someone"despite there being nothing different about it than most backstage segments done by the usual cameramen.

This is probably the most racist gimmick in the last 5 years. What? It may be ridiculous, but how on earth is it racist? Are you saying that Black people are not allowed to be shown doing anything bad? He's doing these things because he is a heel, not because he is black.

Well to be fair, those cameramen are backstage so it's fair game. Pope has been followed in his 'own time' off site.

I don't think it had to do with him being black, but mostly with him being a street preacher who is taking money which he's supposed to be giving to children. He's being exposed as a fraud. However, it seems to be an over the top angle and looking outside of wrestling to get someone some heat. Despite the fact also that they turn people like Daniel Bryan turns pages in the books he reads. They had almost a turn a week last year. It's definitely an odd angle, an odd way to turn someone, but it's definitely not racist. It's Hanlon's razor. Don't attribute to malice what can adequately explained by stupidity.
