If you work the projection booth do you also have to work the concession stand or ticket sales or usher as well? Also do you need formal training to run the projection booth? Alsohow does the projection booth work? Is it all just DVD's or a single DVD or do they do film reels? If you're working the projection booth do you have to stay in there to make sure the projector doesn't become self aware or do you have to do other stuff like cleaning or stock and at certain points just run back into the projection room and hit the projector with a straw broom until the fire stops?

At my theatre only managers could work projection, but I know at my theatre they used a combination of film reels and DVDs. Some films were reels, others were DVDs.

While we're at it, I'm curious about how projecting 3D movies work. Are there two projectors or is the movie already "treated"?

Just from my experience working at a movie theatre. My manager has Doorman/Ushers, Concessionists, Box Office, and etc. The projectionists used to work upstairs when we had film reels, which changed when we went all digital.
The projectionists became Doormen/Ushers. With that said, she pretty much has everyone doing the jobs they're trained for. At times she'll cross-train and all, however, majority of the time everyone just sticks to what they apply for.
It's different for every theatre obviously.

I can't be the only one who thought "did/do" said "dildo" at first, can I?
I wish I had more to contribute to this thread, but I've never worked in a theatre.
So...dildo it is.

I was an usher and concessionaire once upon a time. The managers liked me so they'd occasionally take me to the upstairs area where the movies were projected. I saw how its done and they are indeed on film reels. This was back in 2002-3 so I cant answer the 3d question

In most cases 3D films are projected from two separate projectors. There's a good mini-exhibition of how this process, along with IMAX, works, in the Printworks cinema in Manchester.
