I think much of the music out there sucks, though there are a lot of talented artists. Lady Gaga and Justin Beiber are guilty pleasures; at least they have talent. Usher is quite good; I have one of his songs on my mp3 player. Are there any other artists that you would recommend I should be listening to? This would include rap artists as well. Much of what passes for rap music is hard to listen to and other forms of music as well.

Fair to Midland. One of the most amazing bands out there right now. And much better live than they are in the studio. I wouldn't necessarily say that...but that's just because I love their albums so much. But they are very, very easily one of the best live bands I have ever seen. Their stage presence is immense. They're also, very, very nice guys.

I'm a southern/adult alternative/early 90s alt rock fan.
Most of them are no longer together, some others (Gin Blossoms) reunited, but their recent albums haven't been as good, but there's a few good ones.
Sister Hazel is my favorite. Really, any album short of Heartland Highway (wasn't a fan, there's 3 good songs, but all in all, it's just not as good as I'd expect from them).
But newer bands that carry on that legacy? I'm huge now on Ingram Hill. A Nashville Rock-style band. They just released a great acoustic album (sadly, only available on iTunes), but I couldn't recommend them more.

I think the real problem is that while there's still plenty of good music being made, it's just not being picked up by the record labels like they used to (which is why said labels are slowly dying).
At any rate, I recommend almost anything by Beck or Electric Six.

Well, there's MY ALBUM which is available for free download in my sig.
Otherwise lately I really like:
Homeboy Sandman (worksafe) -
louis logic 's "Idiot Gear" is from 2003, but I just recently remembered how much I like this song. Great melody (language) -
Domo Genesis and Tyler, the Creator (OFWGKTA) have the best song about a Supermarket fight ever (language warning) -

Look up Sage Francis and The Coup. Tell me what you think. I saw you posted "Ride the Fence," are you familiar with early-Coup? I honestly prefer their 90s output as E-Roc played a much needed Flav to Boots' Chuck D. For example -

Major props for the Doom love. Their early stuff is great, but as they got on I found them more unlistenable.

Where to start? Where to end?
New or Old, Obscure or Popular there is so much variety and good music available.
My usual method if I want new music is to either pick up a couple of compilation albums or hit a cd sale and pick up a load of bargains. I'm currently digging a three cd pack of cuban music which I found for only £3, and it is ideal for the hot weather. never listened to it before so could have hated it but in fact really enjoy it.
You could also go to a festival your bound to find new music you like in some form or another, even if it isn't new.
I could recommend anything from Muse & DJ Shadow to Augustus Pablo or Screamin Jay Hawkins but then if I did that I'd be here all day. (Over 9000 songs in my itunes ranging across a spectrum of genres.)
I would recommend the Jolly Boys a reggae group who cover popular songs like Amy Winehouse 'Rehab or The Stranglers 'Golden Brown.'
